Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.

I've never encountered a story like this one, and it was incredibly enjoyable.
lots of it won't be answered for you, fair warning. but it has a profound beauty and philosophy and I liked it a great deal.

Historia
Colombo, 1990. Maali Almeida—war photographer, gambler, and closet queen—has woken up dead in what seems like a celestial visa office. His dismembered body is sinking in the serene Beira Lake and he has no idea who killed him. In a country where scores are settled by death squads, suicide bombers, and hired goons, the list of suspects is depressingly long, as the ghouls and ghosts with grudges who cluster round can attest. But even in the afterlife, time is running out for Maali.

A horror-tinged romance
Revisado: 10-30-24
My second foray into Isabel Cañas, and much less horrific than The Hacienda. Still beautifully written, but definitely more about the love story than the monsters.
performed beautifully.

All My Knotted-Up Life is a beautifully crafted portrait of resilience and survival, a poignant reminder of God’s enduring faithfulness, and proof positive that if we ever truly took the time to hear people’s full stories . . . we’d all walk around slack-jawed.

Absolutely Devastating and Oh, So Beautiful
Revisado: 09-21-23
I listened to the fullness of this book in the course of two days. I could not "put it down" so to speak. I physically cried at points, and laughed out loud at a few others.
I have not cared so much for the subjects of a book in such a long time.
Beth Moore's story necessitates some political commentary, but only in the later chapters, and only a couple of them. If you can't have an open mind about political things, it's not time to read this yet. How sad for you.
Thank you, Beth. This book answered prayers for me.

Excellent Story, Narration is Lacking
Revisado: 08-18-23
This is an excellent story which, as it progressed, had me on the edge of my seat and rooting for heroes and jeering villains, fully creeped out. It's imaginative and vivid, well told and decently paced. A few holes I felt, but nothing major.
The narrator makes Noemi much more disaffected and sarcastic than the writing says she is. And there are parts where each sentence is said the same way, with inflections in the same place each time, no matter what. It could get burdensome to listen to, but eventually the story was so good I just listened more carefully and reimagined Noemi et al saying things differently.
I'd love to see this re-recorded.

Historia
Half-Korean, half-Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa has spent his whole life feeling like a man without a country. This feeling only deepened when his family moved from Japan to North Korea when Ishikawa was just thirteen years old, and unwittingly became members of the lowest social caste. His father, himself a Korean national, was lured to the new Communist country by promises of abundant work, education for his children, and a higher station in society. But the reality of their new life was far from utopian.

Historia
Every Thursday morning for two years in the Islamic Republic of Iran, a bold and inspired teacher named Azar Nafisi secretly gathered seven of her most committed female students to read forbidden Western classics. As Islamic morality squads staged arbitrary raids in Tehran, fundamentalists seized hold of the universities, and a blind censor stifled artistic expression, the girls in Azar Nafisi's living room risked removing their veils and immersed themselves in the worlds of Jane Austen, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Henry James, and Vladimir Nabokov.

A gnarly and amazing adventure!
Revisado: 10-28-17
For anyone who wants something different than maybe anything ever, read translated Japanese literature. My first foray into Murakami (with any real dedication at least) and it was such a trip. It somehow allows those who love details to enjoy, and those who love open scenarios and endings to enjoy, simultaneously. Nothing is answered completely, but everything gets worked out. I don't know how, but it does. Enjoy!

loved it! the pace of the novel is steady, never tiresome. I tend to dislike endings, however, and this was one of those times. The twists were great and the characters genuine. I really enjoyed myself!
