Historia
It is eleven thousand years from now . . . A lot has happened, and yet a lot is still very familiar. Ariel is a boy in a small town under a wizard’s rule. Like many adventurers before him, Ariel is called to explore a world full of unimaginable glories and challenges: unknown enemies, a mission to save the world, a girl. Here, as they say, be dragons. But none of this happens before Ariel comes across an artifact from an earlier civilization, a sentient, record-keeping artificial intelligence that carries with it the perspective of the whole of human history.

We explore this pseudo-post-apocalyptic world with wonder and curiosity around every corner. Light on science and heavy on fiction, plot, and humanity.

Historia
Annie Bot was created to be the perfect girlfriend for her human owner Doug. Designed to satisfy his emotional and physical needs, she has dinner ready for him every night, wears the pert outfits he orders for her, and adjusts her libido to suit his moods. True, she’s not the greatest at keeping Doug’s place spotless, but she’s trying to please him. She’s trying hard.

50 shades of robot
Revisado: 12-29-24
Some exploration of the troublesome life of a sexbot owned by an abusive loser, but too much meandering stagnation and not enough interesting new things to say. Plenty of sex scenes, if that’s what you’re into. Anthropomorphic AI seems a bit old fashioned. Human emotions are taken as for granted in a non-human entity. There’s almost no discussion of the massive societal turmoil that human-passing androids would create. There was a bit of redemption in the final chapter, earning a second star. The voice acting was good, though.

Ok book
Revisado: 08-24-24
I picked up this book because it was on a list of the top sci-fi books of all time. It’s hard to understand why it made that list. It was interesting, in its own philosophical way, but it wasn’t overflowing with science-related ideas. It was more of a political fiction, asking the questions, “What would it be like for a person from an anarchist society to live in an ‘archist’ society, like America’s? How might an anarchist society be structured? What would they value?”

Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Dated, but fun
Revisado: 07-20-24
This was an adrenaline fueled romp through a dystopian cyberpunk future. The sound quality was poor and the interstitial sound effects were cheesy, but somehow this only added to the retro-futuristic vibe. The voice talent was excellent, however.
The things I didn’t like: There were extended info dumps which were more of a historical or mythological study, and affected the pacing in the mid book. The graphic sex scene between a 15-year-old and an older man was in bad taste.

24 hours of jam packed enlightenment

The presentation was a bit robotic, though this isn’t meant to be a melodrama so it’s understandable. I appreciated the specific examples of economic policies and systems which have succeeded and failed throughout time and around the world.

Drank it up
Revisado: 03-03-20
I love my morning dose. This book gives a great overview of the science behind the psychoactive powers of caffeine. We go into the history, economics, and the classic question of "who's using who" which we always ask when we consider our relationships with domesticated plants and animals. Now I know how badly caffeine treats me and how its subtle addictive powers have manipulated me into using it on a daily basis.
I'm willing to forgive you, coffee...

In 1960, Ishmael Reed, then an aspiring young writer, interviewed Malcolm X for a local radio station in Buffalo, and the encounter cost Reed his job and changed his life. In Malcolm and Me, Reed, the author of such classic novels as Mumbo Jumbo and the winner of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, reveals a side of Malcolm X the public has never seen before, and explores how the civil rights firebrand influenced his own views on working and living and speaking out, and left a mark on generations of artists and activists.

Rambling
Revisado: 03-03-20
Less of an audiobook, more of a rambling list of people, places, and ideas. Lots of name dropping. Lots of sidebars. Disjointed. There were some interesting anecdotes, but no through-line to help the reader put it all together in a meaningful way.
