I wasn't expecting to enjoy this particular story as much as others in the series, but I wad pleasantly surprised. I also learned a little bit about"high finance" and monetary theory. Always nice to bed entertained as you learn!
I love the reader, by the way. He really knows how to bring the many distinct characters alive with the smallest inflection of his voice. Very well done!

Historia
Eddie Cantrell, now married to the king of Denmark’s daughter, is sent by Admiral Simpson to the Caribbean to secure access to the most valuable commodity on that continent - not the gold and silver which the Spanish treasure, but the oil which up-time machines and industry need. The admiral has also provided Eddie’s small task force with the new steam-powered frigates that have just come out of the navy’s shipyards. Even with the frigates, a giant obstacle stands in his way.

Great story!
Revisado: 06-21-15
I really liked this book. I found it as enjoyable as any Hornblower book I ever read. As always, the characters are multi-dimensional, and my favorite couple, Eddie Cantrell and his voluptuous bride, Anne Catherine, are always a delight. Highly recommended!

Historia
It is 1864, and London is a city in transition. The Constantine Affliction - a strange malady that kills some of its victims and physically transforms others into the opposite sex - has spread scandal and upheaval throughout society. Scientific marvels and disasters, such as clockwork courtesans, the alchemical fires of Whitechapel, electric carriages, and acidic monsters lurking in the Thames, have forever altered the face of the city.

Surprisingly entertaining!
Revisado: 06-08-15
I wasn't expecting much when I started listening to this book, but was very surprised at how it grab me with its characters and it storyline. Most of all I was very impressed with the reader who didn't excellent job of portraying the various characters. His enunciation, pronunciation and tonal qualities were the best, I think, I've heard in an audiobook. Good job!

Historia
From the internationally bestselling author of No god but God comes a fascinating, provocative, and meticulously researched biography that challenges long-held assumptions about the man we know as Jesus of Nazareth. Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history's most influential and enigmatic characters by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived: first-century Palestine, an age awash in apocalyptic fervor.

A Different Take on Jesus
Revisado: 06-01-15
I certainly learned some new things listening to this book. I would have to know a lot more about the research that went into it before I credit everything that I heard as being accurate. But the author's contentions certainly made a lot of sense and coincide with some of my own research and reading-- limited as they are.
The author's reading was good, although his pronunciation of several words jarred in my ear. Knowing that there are many variations of English throughout the world, I won't hold his reading against him.
Definitely recommended!

Excellent Story

I was pleasantly surprised by how well put together the story was. I loved all of the characters – even the bad ones, who doesn't love to his son but with the bad guys! One of the better 1632 stories!

Historia
James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

A GREAT YARN WITH MANY THREADS!
Revisado: 07-06-12
This was a fascinating story, one not well known to most I suspect. Using the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 as a starting point, the author brings together story lines involving Joseph Lister, proponent of antiseptic surgery, Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, a group of American surgeons, who rejected Lister's techniques, and, of course, James A. Garfield, soon-to-be President of the United States. It is a well told and engaging story from start to finish.
I was particularly gratified to learn about the man, Garfield, and what a great loss to the nation he turned out to be. His presidency came at a turning point in American history, and one can only speculate whether his attitudes and policies about the South, reunification, and the role of African-Americans might have prevented Jim Crow and 75 years of segregation and violence against blacks. These are my own speculations, not those of the author, but she certainly paints a picture of Garfield that makes one wonder!
Good book, well read. Get it!
