Prequels often fail. This one does not. While the ending was known all along, the story of how it got there was well worth the listen.

Agatha Christie turns out to be an awful author
Revisado: 03-21-25
Agatha Christie might be the most overrated author of all-time & I had no idea. I try not to use modern standards to judge older authors, but I can't count the number of times when I realized how terrible Christie is. Regardless, I still suffered through this entire thing just because that's my rule & I kept hoping that maybe she would redeem herself. It never happened.

And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Even better than the amazing film. Almost reads like a long poem. Pure literary genius in one of the most screwed up stories imaginable. Just loved it & the narration, in my opinion, was prefect too.

80 years later & I almost felt like I was there
Revisado: 08-27-23
The descriptions of Hitler's tirades & outbursts were so vivid that I almost felt like I could smell the stench of his breath. It is so important to see all of the key figures who let this sadistic psychopath get a far as he did. Any complaints that the book was too long are unfounded. I would have even wanted to learn more from what went on behind the scenes.

Classic bait & switch
Revisado: 05-23-23
I had listened to every other Harry Bosch novel so far in his series. Since I had gotten this far, I wanted to keep going until the last book & the end of his story. I understand that Bosch was probably getting too old to do any of the things in this novel, but with as little of the story that was actually focused on anything Bosch-related & the feeling that he was a complete afterthought that was added in as a money grab for the author & publisher after the original manuscript was probably presented, I'm extremely disappointed that this was considered to be a Harry Bosch novel at all. I had already bought the last Bosch novel in the series & I hope that it actually has something to do with Harry Bosch. I also hope that the politics that were in this novel don't rear their ugly heads again in the next novel. One of the things that had been so enjoyable about previous Bosch novels was their lack of current political discourse.

Historia
In a case that spans 20 years, Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved. Now Bosch's ballistics match indicates that her death was not random violence, but something more personal, and connected to a deeper intrigue. Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the "black box", the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together.

Better story & Bosch is once again more likable
Revisado: 05-01-23
The Drop really made me dislike Bosch as a hot-headed protagonist who was so over-the-top & rash in his actions that he was totally unlikable & I almost called it quits completely with the Bosch series after 15 books. While Bosch is still Bosch in The Black Box, this one brought him back down to Earth a bit. I'll listen to Book 17.

Historia
An activist attorney is killed in a cute little L.A. trolley called Angels Flight, far from Harry Bosch's Hollywood turf. But the case is so explosive - and the dead man's enemies inside the LAPD are so numerous - that it falls to Harry to solve it. Now the streets are super heating. Harry's year-old Vegas marriage is unraveling. And the hunt for a killer is leading Harry to another high-profile L.A. murder case, one where every cop had a motive. The question is, did any have the guts?

Great book with a great ending
Revisado: 03-19-23
Authors often have difficulty ending their books well. This book was definitely an exception to that rule. Very vivid & compelling. Also, while some reviews complained about the book's narration, I actually enjoyed it. My guess is that, more than anything, they really had issues changing from one narrator for previous Harry Bosch novels to the new narrator chosen for this novel. While I also liked the old narrator, I thought that the new narrator did an excellent job, too.

Historia
Michael Shellenberger has been fighting for a greener planet for decades. He helped save the world’s last unprotected redwoods. He co-created the predecessor to today’s Green New Deal. And he led a successful effort by climate scientists and activists to keep nuclear plants operating, preventing a spike of emissions. But in 2019, as some claimed "billions of people are going to die", contributing to rising anxiety, including among adolescents, Shellenberger decided that he needed to speak out to separate science from fiction.

Fantastic and well researched
Revisado: 12-15-22
This book was a thorough, well-organized & very readable look at the state of environmentalism around the world today. While the environment is obviously very important to the author, Shellenberger dissects very well how the left has overreached and actually harms much of the planet with their radical & either misguided or intentionally bad environmental agenda. He also shows how that agenda only seems to bent on supporting the corrupt business dealings of some of most prolific donors to leftist environmental groups, candidates, and causes at the expense of their own rivals in the energy sector.
