Historia
When Nicole Rayburn travels to Lockwood Hall and begins to research Alys’s story for a new book, she discovers startling irregularities in Alys’s case. Nicole’s suspicions mount as every answer leads to more questions. What really happened to Alys? And what became of her son, who disappeared the day she was hanged? Could it be that Alys’s death was the result of a well-planned conspiracy, or is there another, less obvious answer? And who is trying to sabotage Nicole's efforts by stealing her work?

Irina Shapiro rarely disappoints !
Revisado: 04-18-25
I have yet to read a bad novel written by this author when it comes to dual time line historical novels. Wonderland series will always be one of my favorite series of all time. The Redmond & Haze series fell off in the middle depending on graphic violence and lascivious for shock value. But this was a solid start to what I hope is another terrific series of uncovering the past with interesting characters.

Engaging!
Revisado: 03-27-25
The swearing is jarring & out of place. The characters express themselves very well yet the most offensive swear word is used repeatedly in an otherwise clean & well written mystery. Fantasy is not my typical genre but I am now attached to this group of characters & want to know what happens to them!! On to book 5!

This book was such a pleasure to listen to. It was an excellent reminder of the promises of God. The prayers were not abbreviated and I really appreciated that.

Historia
"The dead can't hurt you. Only the living can." Effie Jones, a former slave who escaped to the Union side as a child, knows the truth of her words. Taken in by an army surgeon and his wife during the War, she learned to read and write, to tolerate the sight of blood and broken bodies - and to forget what is too painful to bear. Now a young freedwoman, she has returned south to New Orleans and earns her living as an embalmer, her steady hand and skillful incisions compensating for her white employer's shortcomings.

A good historical look at New Orleans
Revisado: 02-18-25
I enjoyed following Effie on her journey thru New Orleans 10 years on from the Civil War. So many racial atrocities. It did feel like a very abrupt end! Another few chapters to tie things up would have been very satisfying. Unlike “The Nurses Secret” there is no swearing, thankfully as it was jarring, cringy thb. I am moving on to “The Medicine Woman of Galveston” as I like hearing these stories about the areas I have lived in.

Historia
It has been 12 years since a dark, murderous figure stalked the alleys and courts of Whitechapel. And yet, in the summer of 1900, East London is still poor, still brutal, still a shadow city to its western twin. Among the reformers is an idealistic young woman named India Selwyn-Jones, recently graduated from medical school. With the help of her influential fiance - Freddie Lytton, an up-and-coming Liberal MP - she works to shut down the area's opium dens that destroy both body and soul.

Fantastic Ride! Excellent performance!
Revisado: 02-07-25
This is definitely not one to listen to with young ears. The extremely lewd language didn’t add anything to the story, it just made me cringe. But the overall story is terrific! Characters immediately draw in the reader! Fiona is a fascinating woman, watching her go thru all the emotions of life made for a book I could not put down! Definitely on to the next installment. Narrator did a flawless job on all the accents, a talented voice actress.

Historia
In the autumn of 1707, old enemies from the Scottish Highlands to the Borderlands are finding common ground as they join to protest the new Union with England. An invasion is imminent as many plot to bring the exiled young Jacobite king back to Scotland to reclaim his throne, and in Edinburgh, the streets are filled with discontent and danger. Queen Anne, seeking to calm the situation, has sent money up from London for Scots who took part eight years earlier in the ill-fated Darien expedition that left Scotland all but bankrupt.

Really enjoying this fun, witty mystery series! Thankfully free of graphic sex, explicit language or gratuitous violence. The characters are fleshed out enough to be believable and each add to the atmosphere of the time. Starting #3. The notes at the end are very interesting.
