Historia
When Hazel is given the chance to parachute into Nazi-occupied France, she seizes the opportunity to do more for the British war effort than file paperwork. Alongside her childhood friend, French-born Rose, she quickly rises up the ranks of the freedom fighters. For Rose, the Resistance is a link to her late husband, and a way to move forward without him. What starts out as helping downed airmen becomes a bigger cause when they meet Sophia, a German escapee and fierce critic of Hitler who is wanted by the Gestapo.

Disappointing
Revisado: 03-07-19
I definitely struggled to finish this one :(
Other listeners might enjoy the dramatic narration but I found it over the top.
I found the characters very one dimensional - the good guys were very good and without faults. The bad guys were very bad, although it was hard to tell - you didn't get to know any of the bad guys.

Historia
Only 22, Emma learned to bake at the side of a master, Ezra Kuchen, the village baker since before she was born. Apprenticed to Ezra at 13, Emma watched with shame and anger as her kind mentor was forced to wear the six-pointed yellow star on his clothing. She was likewise powerless to help when they pulled Ezra from his shop at gunpoint, the first of many villagers stolen away and never seen again. In the years that her sleepy coastal village has suffered under the enemy, Emma has silently, stealthily fought back.

Good story marred by poor narration
Revisado: 08-07-18
I enjoyed the story and some of the narration. But as another reviewer cautioned, the narrator's French accent is appalling! I endured it in order to hear how the story ended.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Historia
Exodus is an international publishing phenomenon - the towering novel of the 20th century's most dramatic geopolitical event. Leon Uris magnificently portrays the birth of a new nation in the midst of enemies - the beginning of an earthshaking struggle for power. Here is the tale that swept the world with its fury: the story of an American nurse, an Israeli freedom fighter caught up in a glorious, heartbreaking, triumphant era. Here is Exodus - one of the great best-selling novels of all time.

Sounds more like a history lesson than a novel
Revisado: 06-16-14
Would you try another book from Leon Uris and/or Paul Michael?
I would only listen to another book by Leon Uris if I was sure it was a story, not a history lesson :(
What was most disappointing about Leon Uris’s story?
I enjoyed the parts that were story. I did not enjoy the hours of history of the Jews. I know it's possible to weave history into historical fiction without lecturing for hours.
What didn’t you like about Paul Michael’s performance?
His efforts to depict different characters through different accents and tones was distracting.
What character would you cut from Exodus?
None. The book needs more characters, not less.
Any additional comments?
I was very disappointed in this book. I tried very hard to give it a good chance. But I just can't listen to any more plodding history lessons. I'm giving up on this book.

Historia
When Detective Sime Mackenzie boards a light aircraft at Montreal's St. Hubert airfield, he does so without looking back. For Sime, the 850-mile journey ahead represents an opportunity to escape the bitter blend of loneliness and regret that has come to characterise his life in the city. Travelling as part of an eight-officer investigation team, Sime's destination lies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Only two kilometres wide and three long, Entry Island is home to a population of around 130 inhabitants - the wealthiest of which has just been discovered murdered in his home.

Love this narrator!

What about Peter Forbes’s performance did you like?
I loved Peter Forbes's depiction of the different characters through his voice. The different accents for the different characters really helped bring the story to life! I have never heard such wonderful narration in an audio book - I will be looking for other books narrated by Mr. Forbes.
Any additional comments?
Intriguing story. I thought it was going to be a fantasy-time travel story, with the main character's connection to his great-great-great grandfather. Great combination of historical fiction, mystery, and romance. I hope to find more books like this on Audible.com.

Historia
Anya Savikin lived among well-to-do Russian Jews in Poland, in a world more like Tolstoy's than our own, until the first bombing of Warsaw and the chaos that ensued. Her story incarnates the strength and love of Eastern European Jewry, before and after their decimation.

Loved this book! So rich with details!
Revisado: 05-04-13
What made the experience of listening to Anya the most enjoyable?
The narrator did an amazing job of portraying many different characters just through her voice! Much richer narration than any other Audible book I've listened to so far. Although parts of the story are horrible (of course) I loved hearing Anya's story in her own words. She seemed so real to me that I Googled "Anya" to find out if this was based on a real person. While some reviewers have said that there were too many details, I loved all the details! I felt like I was right there in her home with her.
What does Kathe Mazur bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I really enjoyed hearing the names of people, places and things. When I read a story I try to say the names in that language in my head, and usually fail. When I listened to "Anya" I didn't have to do that work, and so I was more able to immerse myself in the story. I loved Mazur's narration - she did a wonderful job of bringing all the characters to life, like Nanushka's toddler voice and Farah, as well as Anya.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Of course, it made me cry. More than once.
