A captivating tale of art theft

There are no cinematics.
No organized gangs or high-speed car chases.
Just a couple stricken by love, nimbly collecting art through Europe.

Perhaps the only redeemable features I find in Mr. Breitwieser is his appreciation for art. And his continuous claims he was singlehandedly involved in the thefts to absolve his loved ones from blame.

This is true romanticized retelling of one of the most consistent art thieves in history.

So far this may be my favorite of the series. I enjoyed traveling on earth and a hint at some shady political business.

Finally a smart MC. Even though Zach’s skills lean towards strength. He still uses his head and makes some very smart decisions. He doesn’t fall to fits of passion and slaughter evil people just because he can. With great power comes great responsibility.

Eight books are out by the time of writing this review.
I’ve read three so far.

The series has a slow start, but it’s worth the wait.
The first one and a half book have paved the way for a great take off.

The first one was ok IMO. Some of the complaints I had with it were done on purpose (as I learned later on) and fit neatly into the plot. Jake and company grew on me. The world is only growing bigger and more interesting.

From what I’ve read so far, The series promises much potential. I advice any who likes litRPG to power through the first two books. And to those who have yet to try the genre: give it a go :)

This series is growing in all the right directions. The first two books have paved the way and now we’re finally going somewhere. Can’t wait to learn what this new world has in store.

I’m getting the impression that this series has a slow start. But things start to pick up around the middle of this book. It has high potential.

I’ve definitely enjoyed this more than the first book.
Things that bothered me in the first book are explained and now make more sense (without getting into spoilers)

I didn’t like Jake in the first book. But he soon grew on me.

I have a good feeling about the series.

“Be brave, be curious, be determined, overcome the odds. It can be done.”
― Stephen Hawking, Brief Answers to the Big Questions

I've always enjoyed how theoretical physicists romance the universe. Professor Hawking contemplated important (and scary) questions. Questions that some are too afraid to ask or answer. Such examples are: Is there a God? Is time travel possible? Should humanity colonize space? Or will artificial intelligence outsmart us?

Some of these questions jump at me straight out of a sci-fi movie. But we forget that scientists are curious at heart. They dare to ask the impossible and think the improbable. Other questions challenge religion and may be upsetting to some people.

Professor Hawking answered these questions the same way he viewed the universe. Through scientific deduction. Some of these questions are too big for one man to answer. Perhaps some are not meant to be answered.

As a person of faith, it was quite interesting to peek into a scientist's mindset. Religion and science have a history of being at odds with one another. In my humble opinion, I think they complement each other. Science can't always explain religion. Nor can religion dismiss scientific facts. Religion isn't about having evidence. It's about having faith. On the other hand. One must never blindly believe in something. Especially not if the afterlife of their belief is at stake.

All worthwhile scientific endeavors take time. Perhaps humans will outlive their time and never reach a definitive answer to some of these questions. Or perhaps they will. We may never know during our lifetime.

I have the utmost respect for Professor Hawking. He's an inspiration to us all. I could never be as brave as he was. And in this time. I remember these words uttered by his daughter Lucy.
“I will never be as brave as him—I’m not by nature a particularly courageous person—but he showed me that I could try. And that trying might turn out to be the most important part of courage.”

All of the main characters are in desperate need of therapy. And I LOVE IT.

We meet a group of people responding to pain in extreme and different ways. One lashes out at the world and wants to drown it and himself in darkness. One wants to change it for the better at any cost. Even if it meant committing terrible deeds.

We follow the plot as it unfolds from multiple locations and through different characters.
Baoxiang’s has to be my favorite. He’s story is told in the capital of their great empire. We see him navigate his way through the backstabbers of the court of the great Khan with nothing but cunning and wit.

This duology addresses the issue of gender identity through its characters. Which is a subject I tend to shy away from. However, I have to give credit when it’s due. Reading some of these passages was interesting. I appreciate that the author shed a light on this topic without being too forceful. It felt smooth within the narrative. It kind of got preachy at the end. Which brings me to my next point. The ending.

The tension near the ending kept me at the edge of my seat. But the ending itself wasn’t what I had hoped for. It felt predictable. Don’t get me wrong, It was a good enough ending. But I was hoping for something more impactful.

The ending was also abrupt. I wished we spent more time after the conflict resolution.

All in all. This is a great debut series for Shelley Parker-Chan. I look forward to future projects.

I should’ve listened to the reviews.

I enjoyed the first one. But this was disappointing.

I finished most of the book, but then I couldn’t take it any more.

Most of the short stories weren’t engaging or needed. Some where downright confusing. I didn’t know when or why this particular story needed to be told.

There were a few hidden gems. But it doesn’t justify buying the book.

My advice is to buy this book only if you’re a big SW fan, while it’s on sale and to listen to top reviewed stories.

It saddens me to give a low rating to a highly recognized book.

Tolkien is an incredible literarian and an accomplished writer. He created a phenomenal world.

The plot is interesting. But it’s dulled by many leagues of walking in forests and by riversides, with almost to nothing happening.

I wish we had more insight into Frodo’s mind and the ring’s effect on his well-being.

My favorite part was the conversation between Gandalf and Saruman. It was filled with intellectual quips. Tolkien’s talent really shines through it and other similar passages.
You’ll find great quotes scattered through his novels. Sadly, that’s not enough for me to complete his tale.

I watched the movies when I was young and fell in love with them. I started the book with towering expectations. I enjoyed some of it. But for the most part, I found it dull. It kept dragging on and on. Tolkien himself said something along the lines of how this tale was written as a challenge on how long you could tell a tale without losing interest. I’m not sure of the exact wording. I’m not sure he succeeded either.

I only have respect for Tolkien. I’ll forever be grateful that his work inspired many great pieces of literature and art.

And of course, Andy Serkis did a phenomenal job narrating.
