The conflicts didn’t seem contrived and I found the main characters relatable and I felt good about cheering for them.

Despite being a story about likable orphans finding nice homes, this story was painfully simplistic. The narrator reads slowly, which emphasized the simple sentences and inane thoughts of the characters. Everything is over explained and actually repeated. The narrator struggles to enunciate words like “looked” which turned into lookt and “didn’t” which turned into din. The female protagonist takes pains to justify her new marriage to the male protagonist, but he teases her constantly and refuses basic, accessible medical care for an orphan because of his pride. While he eventually, mostly sorts himself out, I am left feeling the female protagonist would be a much happier single mom.

While the book drew to a satisfying conclusion, I found myself missing the characters before I even finished.

Some exact dialogue was repeated from the All Souls trilogy. Tarot replaced alchemy and Russians replaced Germans. And somehow, even without vampires, the story was less believable. Protagonist is a professional victim who can’t even be honest with her original romantic interest or engage in basic respectful ways with family. Not worth the time invested to listen, let alone a credit.

The main character and her mother just failed to do the reasonable thing over and over again. Unbelievable amounts of hand wringing and (accurate) self deprecation. Like, truly, unbelievable. Even suspension of disbelief couldn’t get me over the ridiculousness, and nothing about it was pleasantly or humorously absurd. Just painful. The ending, while wrapping up the action, was a mere 20 minutes of the otherwise drawn out book, and thus leaves one feeling unsatisfied even when things finally start to go right. This book could have been saved (I surprisingly found the characters sympathetic and their original motivations credible), but the deception would’ve needed to stop by the third chapter. If you like reading a book where two sisters, their best friend, and their mother deceive an innocent and warm family, building relationships on lies to create an increasingly toxic situation, this is the book for you.

This is a book written in first person, where the speaker is American. A Detroit American. Listening to the reader/performer give irregular pronunciations of words like “process,” “patina,” “Louisville,” and “Orleans” was really jarring and detracted from my immersion immensely.

There are some really unique and valuable insights here, particularly about “Strange Fruit” and other perspectives that I found very compelling.

In the discussion of forgotten black cemeteries and chattel slavery, I felt it was perhaps a bit narrow. What can be said of the Black experience, in some of the examples, could be said and worse of the Indigenous experience. It’s not a competition, and the Black experience in these examples are relevant to the discussion, but it was presented a bit like the only experience with these examples.

On the whole, however, a great treatment. Covers a lot of ground effectively. A little more editing would have gone a long way, but still worth the read.
