Riveting story well performed
Revisado: 09-17-24
Normally, I don’t like these “radio show” plays, but this was such an interesting story and so well written and performed I was completely drawn in. Until now I didn’t know I was a fan of true crime stories. I highly recommend this recording.

Scandinavia has always been a world apart. For millennia Norwegians, Danes, Finns, and Swedes lived a remote and rugged existence among the fjords and peaks of the land of the midnight sun. But when they finally left their homeland in search of opportunity, these wanderers — including the most famous, the Vikings — would reshape Europe and beyond.

Historia
In the days and months after Pearl Harbor, the lives of Japanese Americans across the continent and Hawaii were changed forever. In this unforgettable chronicle of war-time America and the battlefields of Europe, Daniel James Brown portrays the journey of Rudy Tokiwa, Fred Shiosaki, and Kats Miho, who volunteered for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and were deployed to France, Germany, and Italy, where they were asked to do the near impossible. Brown also tells the story of these soldiers' parents, immigrants who were forced to submit to life in concentration camps on U.S. soil.

Humbling reminder of great deeds
Revisado: 09-09-24
I was aware of the sufferings of Japanese-Americans in the camps and the heroism of Japanese-American troops, but this book brought it to life and provided a deep understanding of the personal sacrifices, contributions and experiences of the Japanese-American community. Great work (again) by the author and a must-read for all Americans.

Historia
With Allied armies poised on the banks of the Rhine, Nazi Germany tottered on the brink of collapse. The ensuing battles on German soil - especially those in the so-called Ruhr Pocket - were as fierce and hard-fought as any in the European theater. Going well beyond previous accounts, Derek S. Zumbro chronicles this key military campaign from a unique and fresh perspective - that of the defeated German soldiers and civilians caught in the final maelstrom of the war's Western front.

One of the best of the many books I’ve read about WWII

As a trained historian I can appreciate the extensive and meticulous research that gave this book it’s very personal and human perspective of a major military event. Excellent writing brought the research to life.

Historia
They were known as “Rudder’s Rangers,” the most elite and experienced attack unit the Army had. In December 1944, they would be the spearhead into Germany, taking the war into Hitler’s homeland at last. Their colonel was given this objective: Take Hill 400. After two days, when they were finally relieved, only 16 Rangers remained to stagger down from the top of Hill 400. The Last Hill is filled with unforgettable action and characters—a gripping, finely detailed saga of what the survivors of the battalion would call “our longest day.”

Drawing on a lifetime of sniffing petrol fumes, Lights Out, Full Throttle stands large over the landscape of Formula One and takes the temperature of the good, the bad and the ugly of the petrolhead’s paradise. Johnny Herbert and Damon Hill between them competed in 261 Grands Prix, amassing 25 wins, 49 podium finishes, one World Championship, 458 championship points, a Le Mans win, two smashed ankles, a broken arm, wrist and leg, 60 broken ribs and two bruised egos.

Fun listen for F1 fans
Revisado: 11-29-22
As a lifelong and enthusiastic fan of Formula 1, I found this quite entertaining. There were some wonderful stories of dramas and antics but also times when the story strayed into periods of blab. The relationship between the two authors sounded too scripted and unnatural. Despite those drawbacks, I enjoyed and would recommend this audiobook. (I can’t imagine reading this as a book.)

Historia
In late March of 1943, four commandos arrive in northern Norway with a mission of establishing a base for sabotage operations. Before they can unload their cutter, they are betrayed, as a German Schnell boat arrives and turns the quiet fjord into a battle zone. Only one man, Jan Baalsrud, surrvives the attack. This is the story of his perilous journey to freedom. Wounded, the dauntless soldier swims icy fjord waters, climbs snow-laden granite peaks, endures violent snowstorms and is hurled off a mountain by an avalanche.

Amazing story but needs pdf maps to be included
Revisado: 11-14-22
The authors used their exhaustive research to weave an inspiring narrative of many heroes… but it’s hard to follow all the characters, movements and locations without any visual reference; The inclusion of a downloadable pdf with those photos and maps, and maybe a timeline would enhance the readers understanding and appreciation of what these people sacrificed and endured.

Historia
Following the disastrous Java Sea campaign, the Allies went on the offensive in the Pacific in a desperate attempt to halt the Japanese forces that were rampaging across the region. With the conquest of Australia a very real possibility, the stakes were high. Their target: the Japanese-held Soloman Islands, in particular the southern island of Guadalcanal. Hamstrung by arcane pre-war thinking and a bureaucratic mind-set, the US Navy had to adapt on the fly in order to compete with the mighty Imperial Japanese Navy, whose ingenuity had fostered the creation of its Pacific empire.

Interesting and enjoyable
Revisado: 08-13-22
Early on, the level of detail the author provides and all the Japanese names of personnel, planes and ships was a bit tiresome but the author’s storytelling ability and dry humor soon outweighed any of those distractions. The books I’d read previously about Guadalcanal and the action in that area had been written from the perspective of the ground forces and the sea and air struggle was related only as it impacted the ground operations. This book provided (me, at least) a much more holistic view of this critical campaign.
I’m moving directly to the authors next book that details the next phase of the battle for Guadalcanal.
