Historia
Seven years ago the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a mockumentary bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a tragedy. Now a new crew has been assembled. But this time they're not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life's work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart, this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Profoundly So-So
Revisado: 11-14-24
Great concept, strong start, poor overall execution. This story would be best served by a drastic reduction of fluff. This story could literally be 1/4 it’s current length if the author avoided rattling off a dozen similes to describe any one thing. They could also remove the endless diatribes meant to familiarize you with a character, but are really just emotionally draining. The author has a serious case of telling instead of showing.
There’s no definitive climax. There’s a teased boss battle at the very end which is avoided. There are pointless tangents which amount to nothing scattered throughout the book, but especially apply to the dolphins. Not one single death is exciting except maybe the first one in the sub.
The book set itself up to be a classic monster thriller, but it’s ultimately a bore which tries to make up for this lacking with feel good fluff.

Good but longwinded
Revisado: 11-04-24
It’s basically an isolation horror story, not unlike the movie alien, or Steven Kings The Shining. Just combined with a British Navel story or a lost at sea story, which becomes much more dominant eventually. Overall the story becomes surrealistic and is introspective overall. I felt like this story would’ve been perfect if it were 2/3rds the length.

Title says it all. Well, almost. It’s a fairly fun book, the kind you can shut off your brain to. It’s a book version of many teen horrors.

Historia
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

Amazing fights, medieval delights
Revisado: 10-18-24
This book was a trip! The story is incredibly dark, and seems to be well researched for an alternate history medieval France. I was a little put off by the fictional Catholic theme at first, but I stuck with it and wasn’t disappointed. The fights and description of battle are on par with the Iliad and the Odyssey, but I would put the overall story telling on par with Lord of the Rings with Witcher vibes. Not for the feint of heart, the easily triggered, and honestly probably not great for casual readers, this is truly a harrowing tale.

Introducing a new translation of Laozi’s classic work that makes the intimidating approachable and the complex comprehensible. Translated by best-selling author Ken Liu and read by acclaimed actor B.D. Wong, this new take on the Dao De Jing speaks directly to the sensibilities of a modern audience. Liu dispenses with footnotes and the granular details of academic debate in favor of presenting Laozi’s invaluable writing as clearly and colorfully as possible.

Very Good
Revisado: 09-14-23
The only issue I had was the author at the beginning; makes it a bit too much about himself. Feels counter to the general message or feels a bit high-handed. Dates himself a bit regarding some of the intro topics.
Otherwise, a very interesting listen. My first exposure to the full version of some familiar quotes and concepts.

Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. Nails for Breakfast
Revisado: 09-11-23
This is definitely a story for those who wish for a different time— a time which fits their inner narrative and want for a more masculine society. To you, I wish you the best lol.
Otherwise, it’s an ok book. Plenty of plot holes sloppily filled in with “being bada$$” or being “hard”. Decent descriptions though, and good fight scenes overall. Feels a bit like the movie ‘Pitch Black’ at times. Tune out, and it’s a decent adventure.

Revisado: 11-24-21
This is an excellent book and production; filled with intrigue, action, and mysticism bound up in what is probably a post apocalyptic setting.
I’m usually hesitant to draw comparisons between works by different authors, and It shares a lot of themes with the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson— I feel like if you enjoy that series you might enjoy this book.
