Solid performances in the classic style...

Probably one of the best stories in the classic style of Sherlock Holmes adventures that I've listened too in quite some time. It has solid vocal performances with a story that is perhaps fanciful, but with our heroes being typically righteous and stalwart, and the villains being callous and evil. Good yarn, and I'll be looking for more from the same author.

Not a lot of "Star Wars" in this teen romance...

I like the idea that the Star Wars universe is sufficiently large that we can find a large variety of stories, and that not everything has to center around the Skywalker/Palpatine King Arthur story. This is essentially a teen romance with Black Spire Outpost as a background. It's the storry of Izzy and Jules, who were friends as young children, separated when they were very young, and brought back together by fate (or the Force?). It's very nicely voiced by Brittany Pressley, and does do a good job of painting the background of Black Spire Outpost in a way that makes me want to go to Disneyland and visit the Galaxy's Edge. Córdova does a good job of creating a pair of compelling main characters and expressing their story. It does however feel a bit thin in the actual "action" of the story. It feels like 90% of the story circulates around the inner thoughts of the two main characters and their feelings (teen love) and with only a very thing and rather pallid description of the actual events (complication, conflict and resolution) that form the backbone of the story.
I would classify this work as a romance novel set in the Star Wars universe. If that's okay with you, it's reasonably well done and you'll have fun, but if you want something more than that, you won't find much to keep you engaged.

Grim, and unpleasant.

I'm about 15 chapters into this book. I normally wouldn't write a review about a book that I've not finished, but the simple fact is that this is a rare book that I feel like I should abandon rather than hope it gets better, or at least demonstrates some virtue that justifies my continued attention. The simple fact is that it's a grim and unpleasant thing to listen to. That might be excusable if it were interesting or exciting, but it's neither. I don't care about the characters. I'm not interested in what's going on. It's almost utterly devoid of humanity, much less anything approaching humor. And to top it all off, the audio performance isn't (unlike the vast majority of Audible books I listen too) pretty flat and uninteresting.

Maybe it gets better, but each time I try to listen to more, I find myself clicking it off. The silence of commuting seems like a better use of my time.

Good, lighthearted fun, aimed almost exactly at me

I admit to a weakness for good, geeky fun and Scott Meyer delivers it well here. This is the story of Marty, who discovers a mysterious file that has the power to alter reality and sends himself back in time so he can be a Wizard in medieval times. I can't help but think it's aimed directly at me: plot elements include music and pop culture elements from my teenage years (I'm now in my fifties). The story is a bit slow to start, but once the story gets going it is brought together from the lively narration of Luke Daniels, who adds a lot of value with his performance. It's silly, it's fun, it's got wizards, and orcs, and time travel. If you go in for that, then the adventures of Marty, Phillip and the rest of his cadre of misplaced computer nerds will make your commute more pleasant. I'll be sampling the next in the series shortly.
