Historia
Young Emmett Farmer is working in the fields when a strange letter arrives summoning him away from his family. He is to begin an apprenticeship as a bookbinder - a vocation that arouses fear, superstition, and prejudice among their small community, but one neither he nor his parents can afford to refuse. For as long as he can recall, Emmett has been drawn to books, even though they are strictly forbidden. Bookbinding is a sacred calling, Seredith informs her new apprentice, and he is a binder born.

Gothic overkill.
Revisado: 03-08-25
Chapters 1 and 2 are excellent. Chapter 3 is long an frustrating. Edit necessary. Characters are excellent, but chapter 3 made me not like the characters. I think the author was going for morally flawed. Overshot the target.

Historia
It's 1946, and the dust of World War Two has just begun to settle. When famous archaeologist Rufus Denby returns to London, his life and reputation are as devastated as the city around him. He's used to the most glamorous of excavations, but can't turn down the offer of a job in rural Sussex. It's a refuge, and the only means left to him of scraping a living. With nothing but his satchel and a mongrel dog he's rescued from a bomb site, he sets out to investigate an ancient church in the sleepy village of Droyton.

Revisado: 02-14-25
There are no weaknesses in this book or its narration. The story is mesmerizing, the narrator admirable. This is the third time I’ve listened to this book and still find parts I’ve missed. Harper Fox and Hamish Long are a brilliant pairing.

Toby never meant to be a highway robber, but needs must. He didn’t plan to impersonate a top London valet either, but when the chance comes to present himself as the earl of Arvon’s new gentleman's gentleman, he grabs it. Unfortunately, the earl is the man he seduced and robbed on the road to get here. Oops.

Too good, too short
Revisado: 08-20-24
A delightful romp with two well-matched characters read perfectly. This could have easily been twice as long. Some writers don’t know when to quit. Ms. Charles doesn’t know when to keep going unless a sequel is underway.

One of the best I’ve listened to
Revisado: 08-04-24
Every aspect of this book is compelling, The story is unique and shines a light on an ugly time in British history. The lead characters are heart rendering and the supporting characters fill out the narrative admirably. The narrator is one of the best I’ve heard, truly excellent. The story never depends on the usual and predictable tropes. I hope a sequel has been or will be written.

Bingable Characters are well delineated by author and narrator. In other books, most sex scenes are for titillation only. These sex scenes are integral to character and narrative. Then there’s the thrill of serial killings and a police procedural. Great stuff.

Strong Warning. Cutting during sex
Revisado: 03-24-24
This could have been a compelling spy thriller. But had this normally excellent writer picked up the pace and not used cutting as a necessary part of orgasm in one of the protagonists, even if it is part of programming by the enemy, the story might have been salvaged. I had to quit.
