Historia
John, an impoverished Scottish minister, has accepted a job evicting the lone remaining occupant of an island north of Scotland—Ivar, who has been living alone for decades, with only the animals and the sea for company. Though his wife, Mary, has serious misgivings about the errand, he decides to go anyway, setting in motion a chain of events that neither he nor Mary could have predicted.

Great descriptions
Revisado: 03-31-25
Great descriptions of the Scottish landscape. Reminds me of "The Old Man & the Sea" -- lots of description & inner dialog but nothing much happens! At the end I thought, is that all? What happens next? The reader was great, with a Scottish accent but not so thick I couldn't understand.

Historia
Beverly Underwood and her arch enemy, Lula Dean, live in the tiny town of Troy, Georgia, where they were born and raised. Now Beverly is on the school board, and Lula has become a local celebrity by embarking on mission to rid the public libraries of all inappropriate books—none of which she’s actually read. To replace the “pornographic” books she’s challenged at the local public library, Lula starts her own lending library in front of her home: a cute wooden hutch with glass doors and neat rows of the worthy literature that she’s sure the town’s readers need.

Stock characters & an improbable fairy-tale ending, but a good place to start conversation on difficult topics. Hopefully readers are inspired to do further reading & start discussions.

Historia
Thomas Jefferson asserted that if there was any leader of the Revolution, “Samuel Adams was the man.” With high-minded ideals and bare-knuckle tactics, Adams led what could be called the greatest campaign of civil resistance in American history. Stacy Schiff returns Adams to his seat of glory, introducing us to the shrewd and eloquent man who supplied the moral backbone of the American Revolution, bringing her masterful skills to Adams’s improbable life, illuminating his transformation from aimless son of a well-off family to tireless, beguiling radical who mobilized the colonies.

Interesting insights into a historical figure I was only vaguely aware of. Interesting "behind the scenes" details of events we all know such as the Boston Tea Party, continental congresses. etc.

Interesting concept
Revisado: 10-08-24
A little slow geting started, but gets to an interesting concept that capitalism is the real evil. The reader makes some of the characters sound snarky & sarcastic, which I might not have chosen. The epilog sets up for a sequel.

Historia
Bill Gates shares what he's learned in more than a decade of studying climate change and investing in innovations to address the problems, and sets out a vision for how the world can build the tools it needs to get to zero greenhouse gas emissions. Bill Gates explains why he cares so deeply about climate change and what makes him optimistic that the world can avoid the most dire effects of the climate crisis. Gates says, "We can work on a local, national, and global level to build the technologies, businesses, and industries to avoid the worst impacts of climate change."

Thorough but over-optimistic
Revisado: 12-22-22
To avoid a climate disaster, we just need everyone in the world to agree to change their lives, and Bill Gates is "optimistic" that can happen. I don't share his optimism, but he provides a comprehensive list of steps that need to be taken, including making better use of technologies available now and finding ways to solve specific problems. Entrepreneurs and scientists in various fields should each pick one problem from this book to focus on. If enough smart people work on this, maybe I could get more optimistic.

Historia
In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her." The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive, the spy organization dubbed Winston Churchill's "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." She became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines and - despite her prosthetic leg - helped to light the flame of the French Resistance, revolutionizing secret warfare as we know it.

Amazing story
Revisado: 12-09-22
Why had I never heard of this woman before, even though I grew up not far from where she grew up? Baltimore County should claim her as a local hero. Her story is fascinating and well-presented here, illuminating for modern audiences the struggles of women and physically-challenged people to use their skills.

As Virginia watched her son's star rise, she often wondered about the other mothers who raised sons and daughters who became rock stars. Virginia decided to seek out other rock star mothers to ask these questions, and so began a two-year odyssey.

Revisado: 11-12-22
Thought-provoking look at the backstories of famous musicians. Creative minds have many common qualities, but the differences in their situations lead them on different paths. Makes me wonder about kids that have creative minds but DON'T get famous & how can schools / parents / communities do a better job of finding & nurturing them.

A few useful ideas
Revisado: 07-30-22
The first few chapters were a lot of cliches (never give up, embrace teamwork; other things you get if you Google "motivational quotes"). The later chapters were an advert for his "Transformation Tables" system. In between were some useful ideas about dealing with people, working with teams of different individuals, and setting goals.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!") I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice.

Revisado: 07-10-22
Dave's reactions to things sound like mine would be: "Holy sh*t, how did a dorky kid from the burbs end up here" -- meeting rock legends & Presidents, touring the world, being invited to exclusive events. I appreciate his perspectives on his family, although I wish he talked more about his wife, especially since his mother was so important to him. A very enjoyable book!
