Historia
Richard Dawkins' brilliant reformulation of the theory of natural selection has the rare distinction of having provoked as much excitement and interest outside the scientific community as within it. His theories have helped change the whole nature of the study of social biology, and have forced thousands to rethink their beliefs about life.

Revisado: 09-06-21
The thesis of The Selfish Gene is a simple concept that would best be served in essay format. Instead, Dawkins expands on the idea with ad nauseum speculation and untestable hypotheses, Including the constant interruptions for endnotes and plugs for his other books feels arrogant, suggesting Dawkins is more concerned with tracking the legacy of his ideas rather than offering the listener an updated, coherent view of nature. I was ready to give up midway through, but I happened to reach Chapter 12, where the idea of memes was first introduced, I found this to be the most valuable part of the book, redeeming hours of wasted listening.

Historia
United States Senator Cory Booker makes the case that the virtues of empathy, responsibility, and action must guide our nation toward a brighter future. Raised in northern New Jersey, Cory Booker went to Stanford University on a football scholarship, accepted a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, then studied at Yale Law School. Graduating from Yale, his options were limitless. He chose public service.

the prize?
Revisado: 02-25-16
After finishing the book, I have more respect for Cory, but the writing seemed cheesily verbose at times. I really wanted to learn more about his side of the story in "The Prize", but it was left out...

Historia
This book shows that the quantitative mathematical models policy makers and government administrators use to form environmental policies are seriously flawed. Based on unrealistic and sometimes false assumptions, these models often yield answers that support unwise policies. Writing for the general, nonmathematician reader, the authors begin with a riveting account of the extinction of the North Atlantic cod on the Grand Banks of Canada.

Interesting but a narrow focus
Revisado: 02-12-11
A much needed expose on the inadequacies of quantitative modeling for environmental systems. A lot of the subject matter seemed to have a narrow focus; i.e. hours of information on beach erosion was not what I expected. Disappointingly, less time was spent discussing climate models. When referencing figures, the robotic phrase "Please reference downloadable pdf from product page where purchased" occurs frequently.

Historia
In this new age of networked intelligence, businesses and communities are bypassing crumbling institutions. We are altering the way our financial institutions and governments operate; how we educate our children; and how the health care, newspaper, and energy industries serve their customers. Once again backed by original research, Tapscott and Williams provide vivid, new examples of organizations that are successfully embracing the principles of wikinomics.

dynamic, indeed
Revisado: 01-15-11
I got Macrowikinomics to learn about recent trends in social development but I think I fell for the hype. I got a lot of business buzzphrases ("interactive web pages"? How many websites are not interactive?) and fluff around some interesting background information on organizations that I was already familiar with. A decent, but nearly-outdated and overly optimistic assesment of the networked age.

Great companies can fail: not because they do anything wrong, but because they do everything right. Meeting customers' current needs leads firms to reject breakthrough innovations, "disruptive technologies", that create the products and opportunities of the future.

See "The Innovator's Solution" Instead
Revisado: 09-10-10
Good concepts for managers and entrepreneurs, but very short and the narration sounds like a bedtime story. For a better value, better narration, and more useful information, see the followup, "The Innovator's Solution" instead.
