The most mundane “thriller”
Revisado: 09-02-19
First she peed, then brushed her teeth...
She ate a hunk of sourdough bread spread with butter and honey...
It would be a good idea to take a shower at some point today...
Even the psychopathic murderers are boring. The murder scenes are boring.
My God, I thought it would never end. The only saving grace is the narrator. How she didn’t fall asleep reading this book I’ll never know.

Asking for a refund
Revisado: 02-10-19
Spoiler alert — By far, one of the worst books I’ve ever listened to. Astoundingly, a movie has been made of it. The story is so implausible. Initially, the creepiness interested me, so I gave it a chance. It got worse. I had hope that there would be some kind of ending that would save it, but the ending was even worse than the story. A commune full of people deliberately blinded, hoping to get some goats? Really? Nine hours wasted, so others won’t have to.

Don't waste your time or a credit.
Revisado: 08-26-16
This is a boring soap opera about a bunch of bitchy females, with the useless men they hate. Dead baby, miscarriages, infertility, mental and emotional anguish...I don't ever recall a book with so many self absorbed, angry, crazy people. It's far worse than anything you could watch on "Lifetime." The narrator did not improve this story, either. Her voice alternately droned and whined, with terrible male voice tone and an irritating high pitched child voice tone -- which made me want to smack the crap out of her. AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH, thank God it's over. I held out in hopes that there would be some bizarre plot twist, but no.

I really tried.
Revisado: 11-06-15
After 14 hours of torment, I'm packing it in. I should have known better, but the reviews were so glowing I went for it. I love historical novels, mysteries, and a good long listen. But by the second hour, I was ready to scream in frustration. The author introduces characters, using a great many words to do so, and they go nowhere. The foul language and perverted sex scenes in this book seem to be there for their own sake, as though the author simply enjoys imagining them, and feels compelled to write them. I stopped listening with 16 hours left to go. The narrator is the only saving grace, and the reason I managed to endure as much as I have. I will be asking for the return of my credit.

Perverted, sick, and much too long.
Revisado: 10-25-15
Initially, I found the story intriguing, and settled in for a nice long listen, and a good mystery. I'm not into sadism, but could have tolerated some, if it was germane to the story -- and it didn't eat up many hours. The narrator shrieking didn't help. I'm pretty disgusted at wasting my credit, and will be asking for a refund.

14 times!
Revisado: 08-10-15
The first time I read "Gone With the Wind," was one summer when I was eight years old. My best friend and I each had a copy, and we read it together. We finished it in three days. Since then, I've reread it twelve times, and finally, I decided to let someone read it to me. I'm so glad I did!

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Ridiculous and implausible. This bunch just happens to stumble upon exactly what they need, at every turn. Spoiler alert--
Scooby Doo, squid whales (squales), and a religious cult that worships them. A comic book version would have been a more appropriate genre.

Historia
We the Living portrays the impact of the Russian Revolution on three people who demand the right to live their own lives. At its center is a girl whose passionate love is her fortress against the cruelty and oppression of a totalitarian state. Rand said of this book: "It is as near to an autobiography as I will ever write."

Early Ayn Rand
Revisado: 05-18-15
One of my favorites. A picture of life in Soviet Russia, in the 1920s. Ayn Rand contrasts the differences between sheep and spirited human beings. It is not as polished as "The Fountainhead," or "Atlas Shrugged," but was published earlier than either of them. This is part of its appeal, however, and doesn't detract from the story. The audio version is helpful for pronunciation of Russian names.

Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

Erik Larson Takes Us There
Revisado: 04-24-15
On another fascinating journey into the past, Erik Larson brings history back to life. This author has a way of drawing the reader in, by making one care about the characters. The details of life aboard a German U Boat during WW 1, and the efforts of British intelligence to track U20, are especially fascinating. "Dead Wake" lacks the parallel plot contained in "Devil in the White City," and "Thunderstruck," but is well researched and held my interest. The book left me wanting to learn more about this period in world history. Scott Brick, as always, does a fine job of narrating.
