Price of freedom is never free nor easy
Revisado: 05-28-23
A poignant and terrifying of capability and incapability of human. Our kindness, our helplessness, our atrocities - all belongs to how we respond to situations. The beautifully translated words had tears streaming down my cheeks as I read of the father calling out for his son in last moments and the son unable to be by his side for the thought that he may die too. That’s how broken the people were made by the atrocities committed on them and a powerful reminder to call out and not be indifferent when we see injustice.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Power of perspectives
Revisado: 02-13-23
One that needs your attention to not miss the nuance of four perspectives that are thought provoking, cerebral, psychological. Masterfully woven and meshed with many more narratives about wealth creation, market manipulation, gender roles and love. Much to unpack - not a frivolous read but one that requires intent and attention in equal measures.
Writing about the plot will give it away and no review will do justice - the truth like the title is in its reading.

Historia
In Blockchain Chicken Farm, the technologist and writer Xiaowei Wang explores the political and social entanglements of technology in rural China. Their discoveries force them to challenge the standard idea that rural culture and people are backward, conservative, and intolerant. Instead, they find that rural China has not only adapted to rapid globalization but has actually innovated the technology we all use today. Wang unravels the ties between globalization, technology, agriculture, and commerce in unprecedented fashion.

Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything.

The most touching and brilliantly written novel
Revisado: 11-26-22
The most touching and brilliantly written novel. Absolutely love the quote: “That we do our best. We plant an apple tree today, even if we know the world is going to be destroyed tomorrow. We save those we can.”
