Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

i thoroughly enjoyed this novel - the story, and related timelines.
Revisado: 03-23-24
i had to look up many words, but that's just me, context covers most definitions. also read parts of Ralph Waldo Emerson's
Self Reliance. interesting, tho i do not share his views. live & learn. this was a page turner, well worth the listen. i do not usually enjoy ensemble casts, but this occasion lent itself well to it.

Historia
Porter Beck is the sheriff in the high desert of Nevada, north of Las Vegas. Born and raised there, he left to join the Army, where he worked in Intelligence, deep in the shadows in far off places. Now he's back home, doing the same lawman's job his father once did, before his father started to develop dementia. All is relatively quiet in this corner of the world, until on old, retired FBI agent is found killed. He was brutally tortured before he was killed and clues at the scene point to a mystery dating back to the early days of the nuclear age.

Struggling w the Misogyny
Revisado: 01-06-24
I’ve gotten thru 7 chapters, and am struggling with the portrayal of the female FBI agent in the story. Very cringy. Story is set in rural NV, an area I have explored a bit, so I have been fascinated by the locale, historic (1950s) aspects, and spy & murder - but I am not sure I will b able to continue listening.

One resignation from the police force, two bullet-wounds, three suspicious deaths, and a beautiful woman later, he quickly learns that whenever he breaks his first rule, mayhem follows.

Narrator very good, aspects of story, not so much
Revisado: 07-13-23
I wanted to like this novel, but I found aspects challenging. The main character’s rage, & the romance, were off-putting. You’d think at his age, & experience, he’d be better with both. The mystery was interesting. Tho there were incongruities, [PLOT ELEMENT]. like who let the new cult leader in?!

Simon is the best delivery boy that Mr Edwards’s restaurant has ever had. He’s on time every time, and he’s gotten nothing but good reviews. But he needs more money. His mother’s medical treatment won’t pay for itself, and his father is already working three jobs to try to make ends meet. But it might just be his lucky day: Mr. Edwards has another job for him. It’s more delivery work, but not the usual kind. You might even say that it’s out of this world. Oh well. Beggars can’t be choosers, and the pay is fantastic.

It’s New Year’s in Sinful, and the competition for the New Year’s Queen is heating up as the warring churches go head-to-head. Fortune Redding is not the sequined dress kind of woman, but reluctantly agrees to partake in the debacle so that Ida Belle and Gertie can best their nemesis, Celia, who’s put up former Sinful mean girl RJ Rogers. RJ and her friend Ricky Benoit left plenty of devastation in their wake when they fled Sinful after high school. So when they return and Ricky is found dead, there’s no shortage of suspects.

Book 22; perhaps NOT the place to start
Revisado: 09-19-22
I enjoyed the characters, & the location. Reader did a good job, as each characters’ voice was distinct. A bit inane, kinda in a fun way, I believe that was what was intended. I wouldn’t recommend starting the series here as I did.

Delightful story
Revisado: 07-22-22
This a delightful story! The reviews I read were from people who live, or lived, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan - & I will admit I was in the UP sightseeing when I got & listened to this novel - BUT this is a lovely small town story - stand alone from being in the area!
I don’t write reviews even tho I have listened to hundreds of audio books - but felt this one needed another review - because I really enjoyed it!
You really like all the characters, & hope for a great outcome!

Historia
When she was suddenly given the opportunity of a new life in rural Jutland, journalist and archetypal Londoner Helen Russell discovered a startling statistic: the happiest place on earth isn't Disneyland but Denmark, a land often thought of by foreigners as consisting entirely of long, dark winters, cured herring, Lego and pastries. What is the secret to their success? Are happy Danes born or made?

Good narrator, compelling story
Revisado: 08-22-18
There were parts of this book that were laugh out loud funny. There was a scene about their dog, and a confirmation celebrant that I was laughing so hard I had to pull off the road! Also some funny ramiken stories!
The narrator did a fabulous job with the attitude I believe the author meant to convey. The accuracy of the Danish I cannot judge.
The facts about researching Denmark top rating for happiness were interesting.
The authors nicknames for everyone kept all the characters straight. as she comments, lots of the Danish have similar names.

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Unexpected, & interesting
Revisado: 02-20-18
This was unexpected. I bought this because it was on sale, and was intrigued to hear Zachary Quinto read. His voice is very easy to listen to, he did some voice differentiation, but not dramatically so. I, however, think his voice was very apropos for the story.
The story was very interesting. Kind of sci-fi, kind of mystery - just a really interesting idea, handled well.
