Scalzi did this style of story earlier and better with The Android's Dream. If you haven't read this older book, then many of the concepts are probably new and fun. Having already read it ... not so much. Still a worthwhile listen if you're a Scalzi fan, especially for free!

There was a lot of good information in the audio series and it was worth the time listening to the audiobook. The author seemed unusually pro-Marxist/Leninist and was very forgiving of Stalin. The book paints a picture of good (communist Republican) vs bad (Franco fascist), when most other accounts I've read on this war are bad (totalitarian fascist) vs bad (totalitarian communist). I suppose this stems from an inherent socialism/communism bias that seems prevalent at many universities.

It's hard to believe this book was written by the the author of Dameon and Influx.

Characters - all of the characters are uninteresting cliches. What happened to the brazen, smart and complex players that Suarez usually develops?

Story - The story is exceptionally slow and not very engaging. There are few interesting plot twists .... only some unbelievable and too-easy fixes. Suarez usually has a lot of interesting science in his books ... fun extrapolations of current technology. There's not much good science fiction here ... nothing that Elon Musk hasn't already imagined before and better.

Style - I usually love Suarez's acerbic social commentary and mockery of silly fads, but there's none of that here. The dialog is not authentic or interesting ... the characters seem to be either over-the-top angry or cloyingly sentimental all the time.

Narration - Gurner is usually exceptional, but this time his performance seemed forced. The constantly changing foreign accents were a real distraction, and many of his dramatic inflections were over done or out of place (Like Scott Brick on a bad day).

Hilarious satire on tech and millennials. Why do I need to write fifteen words in order to publish a review?

Very disappointing after reading Ove. The story was only mildly interesting. And the narrator was mis-cast; she has an engaging voice, but not one that invokes rural Scandinavia.

I enjoyed the book and listened to it almost nonstop, as I do with most of Connelley's books. Nonetheless, the Lincoln Lawyer series seems to be loosing some steam. For example, the author recycles several non-core characters from his old books, and it starts to feel like this is a reunion episode rather than new material. Also, key "new" characters like the judge, cops and prosecutor are stereotypes from his old books and aren't very interesting or well developed. He hasn't quite "jumped the shark" just yet, but I fear that it is coming.

Daemon Deja Vu in Deep Space

The story follows the basic Daemon pattern ... a brilliant, seemingly evil billionaire has an elaborate plan to change the world. In this case, it's deep space rather than MMO.
The good: Suarez is brilliant at weaving near-future technology into an interesting story that stretches the mind. Jeff Gurner did his usual great job at narration.
The bad: The writing and story are sloppy compared to his prior books. The first 75% of the book could have been cut in half, and the character development wasn't up to Suarez's usual standard.
The inevitable: Clearly this book is screaming for a sequel.
Overall: Worth the credit and glad I spent the time, though I'm hoping the sequel will be more tightly written.
