Fantastic!!
Revisado: 05-11-23
I absolutely loved this book. The narration was perfection. And the information was interesting and extremely thorough. I am an avid true crime fan but never really dug into the Delphi case. I was intrigued by the details and occasional theorizing given by the author. I especially enjoyed the moments when Nic gave some history regarding the True Crime Garage and its beginnings. And the bombshell info about The Captain. I had never known they were related. I came away from listening feeling even more connected to Nic and The Captain. It felt like Nic let his guard down a bit and shared a bit of himself in a vulnerable way. I have been a fan of the podcast for awhile now, but after listening to this book I feel even more connected to the show. I also was impressed with the ease of flow of the story telling even though there has not been a resolution to the case. I’m looking forward to another book once the trial is over and more details are known. I wasn’t sure what to expect from a first time author. Sometimes people get a taste of fame and notoriety and think they have a golden touch even in areas they have no business diving into. This is NOT the case with this book. It was well done, interesting and easy to listen to. And this is coming from the queen of shutting off books that bore or annoy me in someway. I was engrossed from the minute Kevin Pierce started talking. I hope to listen to many more books written by Nic and narrated by Kevin. They make a great team. Almost as good as the Garage Guys themselves. 😉

Historia
On September 6, 1949, 28-year-old Howard Barton Unruh shot 13 people, in less than 12 minutes, on his block in East Camden, New Jersey. The shocking, true story of the first recorded mass-shooting in America has never been told, until now. Through the eyes of the young boy who visited Howard regularly to listen to his war stories, and the mother trying to piece together the disturbing inner-workings of her son’s mind, Ellen Green uncovers the chilling true story of Howard Unruh - the quiet oddball who meticulously plotted his revenge on the neighbors who shunned him.

Very interesting story
Revisado: 06-23-22
This was one of those books I got lost in and wish it had lasted longer. The true story was fascinating and it’s incredible how so many of the themes are timeless…the world is still the same today. I had never heard of this shooting until listening to the author on True Crime Garage podcast. I also enjoyed the narration. It was easy to listen to and not distracting at all. I liked the format of the story-broken into chapters being told about different characters. Just all around a great listening experience. Unruh is a fascinating case and I would love to know how he would be diagnosed with today’s advances in the mental health field. I enjoyed this so much that I bought a physical copy to be sent to my mom. I really think she will find this to be as fascinating as I did. Especially since she born in the late 30’s and was alive when this happened. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in true crime but it’s so much more than that even. Definitely worth a credit.

Great listen
Revisado: 08-14-21
This is one of my favorite true crime books that I've listened to. It goes deep into the backstory of Shawcross and several of the victims family members. I'm always more interested in why someone does what they do instead of only the shocking telling of the crimes. And it's heartbreaking but interesting learning how the crimes affected those left behind. It was also fascinating listening to the psychiatric interviews done with Shawcross trying to nail down a diagnosis of his mental condition. I highly recommend this book if you are more interested in the "why" instead of just the "what." I wish more true crime books took this approach.

Historia
To his neighbors, Wayne Nance, a furniture mover from Missoula, Montana, appeared to be an affable, considerate, and trustworthy guy. No one knew that Nance was the "Missoula Mauler," a psychopath responsible for a series of sadistic sex slayings that rocked the idyllic town between 1974 and 1986. Nance's only requirement for murder was accessibility - a preacher's wife, a teenage runaway, a female acquaintance, a married couple. Putting on a friendly façade, he could easily gain his victims' trust. Then, one September night, thirty-year-old Nance pushed his luck.

I can't believe I had never heard of Wayne Nance before. This was a fascinating story and I felt like the timeline of events was very well written out. Easy to listen to and follow. This story will remain with me for quite awhile I bet.

Historia
When 11-year-old James Renner fell in love with Amy Mihaljevic, the missing girl seen on posters all over his neighborhood, it was the beginning of a lifelong obsession with true crime. That obsession led James to a successful career as an investigative journalist. It also gave him PTSD. In 2011 James began researching the strange disappearance of Maura Murray, a UMass student who went missing after wrecking her car in rural New Hampshire in 2004.

Listened in one night
Revisado: 03-20-21
This was my favorite Audible purchase ever. I started listening after work in Friday night. It is now 2am on Saturday morning. I have never listened to a book straight thru until now. But this was fascinating and impossible to turn off. The author's personal story was as interesting if not more so than the Maura Murray case itself. Do yourself a favor she's listen to this story. You won't regret it. My only regret is that it's over.

Revisado: 11-13-20
I wasn't sure what to expect with this story but I found myself completely lost in it from the beginning. The interviews felt very genuine and the story was told in a way that was easy to follow. I think there are a lot of lessons to be learned about the aftermath of trauma and the importance of dealing with the emotions instead of stuffing them inside.
