Connelly's best book so far!
Revisado: 06-25-11
Though most of his defense lawyer novels are good, this one is great. The characters, as usual, are well developed and believable. The plot is compelling and timely to the rash of home foreclosures and shady tactics by banks to recover their money. The conclusion is somewhat unexpected and very clever. Narration is very good. A must read for Connelly fans.

Historia
Liam Mulligan is as old school as a newspaper man gets. His beat is Providence, Rhode Island, and he knows every street and alley. He knows the priests and prostitutes, the cops and street thugs. He knows the mobsters and politicians--who are pretty much one and the same. Someone is systematically burning down the neighborhood Mulligan grew up in, people he knows and loves are perishing in the flames, and the public is on the verge of panic.

One of the best books I have read!!!
Revisado: 06-25-11
This first novel is clever, the characters are well developed and sometimes hilarious, and the descriptions of life in Providence, RI are not to be missed if you are from New England. The plot is well developed with a surprising and satisfying conclusion. The narration is excellent and fast paced. A must read, very unlike the bestseller formulaic mysteries you see prominently displayed at the bookstore-- and minus the gore. I laughed many times at the dialogue and you will too!

Excellent book; Poor Narrator
Revisado: 10-01-10
I haven't finished reading this book yet, but felt compelled to write a review because I am so annoyed with the narration. Unlike all of the wonderful narrators of so many audiobooks, she doesn't change her voice or tone to distinguish between the characters. Aside from one character with a Southern accent it is very difficult to distinguish among them, and she doesn't capture the feelings of the characters in her voice. The book is very good and I think I will finish it in print.

The story is pedestrian, predictable and somewhat boring. I gave up after an hour of ceaseless bantering between the pios CSIs that dominate the story. Anyway, they tell you who the bad guy is 30 min. into the story. Boring.

Boring and disappointing
Revisado: 10-31-06
I gave this book only one star because it is a very predictable, drawn out story with no dialogue to speak of. The plot centers on the mystery cargo of the terrorist vessel and the behind the scenes plotting of Al Quaeda, but after listening for a few hours you get tired of waiting for the climax--which is anything but exciting. No vintage Forsythe here, just a dreadfully dull story that could have been been developed in a fraction of the time required to finish the book. Buyer beware!

Revisado: 10-23-06
This book, much ballyhooed as the return of a great author, is an annoying production--both from the supposedly clever plot line to the grating narration. The characters are such caricatures that they insult the intelligence of the reader. I tried twice to continue this novel, thinking it might get better, but it failed to do so.

Now, more than a decade later, with the Gesto file still on his desk, Bosch gets a call from the district attorney. A man accused of two heinous murders is willing to come clean about several others, including the killing of Marie Gesto.

Very disappointing
Revisado: 10-19-06
Usually Connelly's novels are a cut above the crime thriller genre, but this one falls terribly short. Yes, the plot is interesting, but the bravado and unrealistic antics of the cop hero really get tiresome. Too much tough talk and weak characterization add up to a flimsy work. The romantic angle, especially the narrator's annoying personification of Bosch's lover, is absolutely dreadful. It's hard to believe that the same author wrote the Lincoln Lawyer. It seems that he is now into the mode of "churning out" titles, and poor ones at that.

Prosaic and compelling
Revisado: 10-07-06
This first novel is indeed a feat of fiction, skillfully written and plotted. Although you can anticipate the subterfuge to come towards the end, where the story does get a bit melodramatic, the book succeeds in providing a solid story. It is quite long, but the characterizations are well done and it does have its clever twists and turns. The narration is good, although the reader's improvisation of female characters, especially Emily, is rather grating. All in all, a good listen.
