Historia
Simon Serrailler is faced with that most complicated of investigations - a cold case. Freak weather and flash floods have hit southern England. The small cathedral town of Lafferton is underwater, and a landslip on the moor has closed the roads. As the rain slowly drains away, a shallow grave - and a skeleton - is exposed; 20 years have passed, and the remains of missing teenager Joanne Lowther have finally been uncovered. Joanne, an only child, had been on her way home from a friend's house that night.

Historia
The cathedral town of Lafferton seems idyllic, but in many ways it is just like any other place. As part of the same rapidly changing world, it shares the same hopes and fears, and the same kinds of crime, as any number of towns up and down the land. When one day DC Simon Serrailler is called in by Lafferton's new Chief Constable, Kieron Bright, he is met by four plainclothes officers. He is asked to take the lead role in a complex, potentially dangerous undercover operation and must leave town immediately.

More interested in the support characters
Revisado: 04-06-15
Would you try another book from Susan Hill and/or Steven Pacey?
Yes, if only to see what happens next. This book ends on a sort of cliffhanger. I also love listening to Steve Pacey,
What could Susan Hill have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I can't lie, I am quite bored with Simon Serrailler's private life, I wish the author would just stick to the case. I found myself more interested in the supporting characters, I was intrigued by Kat's family, Judith's struggle in her marriage and I wish she had elaborated on what happened to Simon Serrailler's girlfriend. You know there is a problem, when you are skipping the chapters to get to parts dealing with everyone but the main character.
What about Steven Pacey’s performance did you like?
He is the only reason I keep listening. Wonderful portrayal of the different characeters.
Do you think The Soul of Discretion needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes, if only to resolve the incidents and relationships. I guess to also find out what happens next, more for me the other characters than, Simon, but still...
Any additional comments?
Not really, this was not just for me, I am finding Susan Hill's support characters so much more interesting than her main character. Her last, three books have had some really strong side stories, that captivated my interest.

Too much going on
Revisado: 03-19-15
What did you like best about The Risk of Darkness? What did you like least?
I loved the resolution of the previous story, i liked the way she ended the story and the other characters affected by the outcome. I did not like all the other stories, it started to feel too busy and not coherent...it felt too busy.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
It was ok. I am just tired of british authors not allowing their main characters to have success in their personal live.
What about Steven Pacey’s performance did you like?
He is the only reason I keep reading, he is excellent.
Do you think The Risk of Darkness needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes, would like to find out what happened to Eileen and Ed.

This was a fair continuation to the story of the others. I had hoped for more regarding the blood prophets, but I guess the author feels she has more to tell and we will find out in the next book. Enjoying the story still...looking forward to the next installment

Distracted by Sideline story
Revisado: 11-21-14
What did you like best about The Babes in the Wood? What did you like least?
I liked the main story and how as usual the story unfolded slowly. What made me not give the story more starts, was the side story involving Wexford's daughter, The way the author chose to handle the situation was very disappointing and it totally distracted me from the rest of the story.
What was most disappointing about Ruth Rendell’s story?
Like I said the way she handled what happened to Silvia, was a bit confusing. Everyone acted like it wasn't a crime, and there was nothing they could do. The whole thing that happened after, was beyond annoying. I could not believe Wexford did what he did after all he had witnessed.
What about Nigel Anthony’s performance did you like?
He did great, loved him.
Was The Babes in the Wood worth the listening time?
Yes, overall it was.

Historia
Life for Henrietta Jenkins was a quiet, well-ordered affair - a home with her widowed mother and degree studies at university. But her life changed dramatically when, just before her 21st birthday, her mother’s body was found in a quiet road, apparently the victim of a hit-and-run driver. For not only did the simple case turn into a murder hunt, but the post mortem also revealed that Grace Jenkins had never had any children. In which case, who was Henrietta?

Good story.
Revisado: 10-31-14
What did you like best about Henrietta Who?? What did you like least?
I liked the character of Henrietta, I liked the way her she worked her way through the mystery. I of course also liked Inspector Sloan and his side kick constable Crosby. I love Crosby constant muttering, and the way response from Sloan.
What did you like best about this story?
I love the way the story progresses, keeping the solution a mystery till the end.
Did Robin Bailey do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
I like Robin Bailey's voice, because having lived in London, his accent makes sense. The only issue I have with his narration is that it needs better editing, he had a terrible tendency to swallow loudly, and when he is speaking sometime it seems like he has false teeth. There is a wetness to his reading, like his mouth is constantly filling up with spit.
Was Henrietta Who? worth the listening time?
Yes, absolutely.

Slow to getting to the point...
Revisado: 10-15-14
What disappointed you about The Old Silent?
I really wanted to like the story, but I have gotten used to Ms. Grimes love of pointless musing, irrelevant storylines, and flights of fancy of her characters. The dialogues in her stories can be frustrating at times, especially when you are not sure what this has to do with moving the story along. This story was 2 hours in and I was ready to pull my hair. All the internal dialogue, the witty repartee with no direction, and a whimsy that was very juvenile at times. It just took forever to get to the point.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Not, sure. Having a hard time finding anything right now.
Which character – as performed by Steve West – was your favorite?
I love Steve West, his performance is the only reason I kept reading
What character would you cut from The Old Silent?
Not so much the characters, but the dialogue.

In a rainy ditch in a Devon wood, a hitchhiker is found dead. Devon policeman Brian Macalvie is convinced that the two murders are connected. And thus, in his eighth case, Richard Jury is drawn into the so-called Porphyria killings.

Review of last 3 books.
Revisado: 09-26-14
What did you like best about I Am the Only Running Footman? What did you like least?
Ms. Grimes books are definitely growing on me, and I think more than anything the narrator really adds to the stories. I like the clever repartee and intelligent plot lines. What I am beginning to no like about this books, especially after 3 consecutive examples of this, is the dramatic endings, with the same outcome, It is almost as if she can't think of a way to end her books, or she feels the need to end with a twist. It is starting to get old, and a little predictable.
What was one of the most memorable moments of I Am the Only Running Footman?
In all of her books, I love how the stories are brought together, and of course my favorite character is Agatha...love her, love her, love her.
Which character – as performed by Steve West – was your favorite?
Steve West is an excellent narrator, and as each story gets better so does his narration.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Not sure, I'm not one for books turned to movies.

Historia
Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

Dissaponting saga, underwhelmed.
Revisado: 09-04-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If the author had picked up the pace of the book. I think because this book was a follow- up from a very dramatic ending in the last book, the author was trying to slow down the pace. There was a lot of reflections, quotes, and aimlessness I felt to this story. The end was such a disappointment, that what redemption could have come out of the book was lost.
What was most disappointing about Louise Penny’s story?
I felt like she was a little to overindulgent, the book was a lot of phrases that kept being repeated over and over. There was a lot of reflections on things that were maddening to me, and to be honest I felt that book was longer than it needed to be. Once again, the end was a total let down. I can't get over it. Why redeem a character, just to treat him like that.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Yes, the narrator was o.k, and he definitely marched the pace of the story which did not help, as the pace was really dull, and convoluted.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Long Way Home?
Oh, my where to start. Most of the conversations were a tad redundant. I get it, it was an exploration into art, but still It was too much detail. Too much detail that in the end had nothing to do with the conclusion, or the murder.
Any additional comments?
Not sure if her next book will be an automatic buy, this was so disappointing.
