I don’t have the words to really express how impactful Viola’s story is. IS, not was! I was initially moved by her interview with Oprah and immediately purchased it on audible. I was then gifted a hardcopy. I chose to listen to her words in her voice and am so glad I did because I felt the emotion and rawness of her life as she told it. I felt closer to her. It was as if I was watching her life unfold as I reflected on some of her performances. To have the book also added to the impact because the photos created a visual that helped fill in the gaps.

Her life is one in familiar with. Whether it was something I’ve dealt with firsthand or witnessed, I could relate. To see her triumph despite the trauma, her resolve, her resilience…it lit such a fire in my soul and reminded me that I am not alone & to keep on, keep keeping on!

She is a beautiful woman. I am so grateful that she shared her story and showed up for all the black girls & women!

I recommend this book to everyone, not just women but to those who love them to gain better insight on the hurdles we have to get over. The only suggestion I have is for Carol to consider narrating her own book. I watched her Ted talk and it would have been best to hear her talk about her own dialogue with these women. Overall, I appreciated hearing stories and felt inspired to take action and be persistent in my endeavors!
