Amazing series.
Revisado: 11-22-24
Overall, this has been my favorite series I've ever read. very interesting magic system, good humor, interesting philosophy, and while the main character is definitely "the main character," it's not just an unmitigated power-fantasy. Jason may be central to the story, he still has to rely on others.
The familiars are excellent.
minor spoilers:
This book has a couple questionable turns... How Jason treated the healer seemed foolish. And two major plotlines seemed to just be dropped with another one kinda starting out of nowhere in a weird way.

Historia
Once upon a time, in the magical land of San Francisco, there lived a not-so-ordinary girl named Laurel Pettigrew. She was supposed to be the Chosen One. The plan was simple: She would vanquish the great evil Tybus in an epic battle. But destiny had other ideas, and Laurel's performance in the whole heroics department was a colossal flop. Now, instead of being a legendary hero, Laurel's the resident pariah of the magic realm. And what’s worse, the dark wizard Tybus swooped in, took over the realm, and forced all supernatural creatures to live under his tyrannical rule.

Great voice acting... confused about intended audience?
Revisado: 02-16-24
the good: Talented voice actors all around. And a good concept for a story, and interesting references to some obscure concepts.
... But the tone sort of came off as a live-action Disney show. It was less a dramatic situation and more "everyone being cartoonishly exaggerated and petty." But, at the same time not kid-friendly enough to be appropriate for the people who would find this tone of story telling engaging.
I love all of Felicia Day's stuff, but didn't enjoy this specific style.

Historia
Dr. James Papandrea introduces you to all the major theologians, philosophers, and martyrs of the early Christian church and explains the theological principles that guided the Church from the New Testament era through the apologists, and, ultimately, to the development of the major doctrines. He uniquely situates the teachings of the early Church Fathers against the social and cultural context of the Roman Empire and its relationship to the Church.

Never actually reads any of the church fathers
Revisado: 07-21-23
The title would be more accurate if it were "the Roman Catholic traditions about the church fathers" rather than "Reading the church fathers."
(I acknowledge I have bias as I am not a fan of the church of Rome or what it's done to Christianity)
Ot speaks on behalf of church fathers some, but spends most of the time declaring church tradition (only really referencing that a church father may have discussed the topic of this tradition and therefore Rome's expectation is that people associate its decisions with their authority.
One quote I appreciated the honesty of is the explanation of the formation of Rome's traditions:
"As Christianity emerged as a separate religion from Judaism, it inherited some of the cultural aspects of Greek philosophy."
Although, because new cultural aspects don't retroactively change what people in the past taught, it is fair if slightly rephrased:
"As the church of Rome emerged as a separate religion from Judaism, it inherited some of the cultural aspects of Greek philosophy."
So, while I disapprove of the content itself, it IS presented clearly, and the narrator does a good job. It's a good quality look into Roman interpretations and traditions... but don't expect any reading of any church father.

Good info (from a JW).
Revisado: 09-26-22
This is not an inspired or religious text, by any means, but a historical account of one person's perspective as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. One who happened to be close to the first three "presidents" of the organization, with specific permission and endorsement from the president at the time.
It's supportive, not adversarial. But it also does a good job describing the real, imperfect, human nature of the people involved. It goes into some good, specific references about how fundamental it is to our congregation for all of us to follow Jehovah, not men. And that the expectation has always been to avoid idolizing any humans, or making the service about "people" rather than God himself, and his Son.
Worthy book to listen to and consider.

Historia
Composed in four parts between 1883 and 1885, Thus Spoke Zarathustra is the most famous and influential work of German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. The work is a philosophical novel in which the character of Zarathustra, a religious prophet-like figure, delivers a series of lessons and sermons in a Biblical style that articulate the central ideas of Nietzsche's mature thought.

(I have bias, as a Jehovah's Witness).
I can see why this book is popular among Atheists. The main character is an intellectual that gains respect everywhere he goes by men from kings to fools for his intellectualism and insistence that God is dead, religion is a farse, and popular morality is immoral, and that humanity can not wait for paradises and heavens, but must surpass itself by it's own strength.
I get it. However, the main character is anything but an atheist. He believes in God, only that he died. The main character is presented as some sort of vaguely divine figure, coming down to visit humanity awaiting for someone worthy to gift with his wisdom, and consorting with other supernatural entities (sometimes presented as the devil, or something similar).
Animals, he respects (so long as they are animals that flock around him and submit to him). But his views on women are pretty derogatory, even compared to his views on men.
This particular translation is also presented in the style of King James English. I've heard there are more modern translations that give it an entirely different tone, making him out to be someone who DIDN'T want to be worshipped. which seems the opposite of this presentation.
I suppose the most valuable lesson to be learned is a warning: This is quite a long display of attempting to prop one's self up, not by improving one's self in any way, but strictly by demeaning everyone else in hopes to tear them down far enough below you so as to seem relatively superior to them.
It's certainly poetic and complex. But the content is a bit ironic.
