Historia
In the near future, a civil servant is offered the salary of her dreams and is, shortly afterward, told what project she’ll be working on. A recently established government ministry is gathering “expats” from across history to establish whether time travel is feasible—for the body, but also for the fabric of space-time.

really liked it, but I don't get the ending
Revisado: 10-07-24
I really enjoyed this story, but the ending gets confusing. I think it's a function of a book being written for reading versus written for listening. I suspect if I read this on paper, it would have been less confusing regarding understanding the narrator and which timeline she was in.

Historia
Throughout the 10 stories in You Think It, I'll Say It, Sittenfeld upends assumptions about class, relationships, and gender roles in a nation that feels both adrift and viscerally divided. With moving insight and uncanny precision, Curtis Sittenfeld pinpoints the questionable decisions, missed connections, and sometimes extraordinary coincidences that make up a life. Indeed, she writes what we're all thinking - if only we could express it with the wit of a master satirist, the storytelling gifts of an old-fashioned raconteur, and the vision of an American original.

Historia
Dr. Briana Ortiz’s life is seriously flatlining. Her divorce is just about finalized, her brother’s running out of time to find a kidney donor, and that promotion she wants? Oh, that’s probably going to the new man-doctor who’s already registering eighty-friggin’-seven on Briana’s “pain in my ass” scale. But just when all systems are set to hate, Dr. Jacob Maddox completely flips the game . . . by sending Briana a letter. And it’s a really good letter. Like the kind that proves that Jacob isn’t actually Satan.

good but...
Revisado: 04-22-24
I have listened to two other books by this author, and I really liked them. I'm a little disappointed in this book so far though, because the author seems to be embracing the "characters not having basic conversations that normal adults would have that would solve their problems" trope. she noticeably did not do this in her other books, which is part of why I liked them so much. this trope is dragging on a bit long in this book, and I just don't appreciate that type of plot.

Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it's now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They'll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work.

The description doesn't do it justice
Revisado: 04-15-24
this book is *so* good. The description truly does not do it justice, at least not the one on audible. it comes across as a breezy summer romance book, but it is so much more layered and complex than that. this book dives into relationship dynamics, and the impact of life and childhood experiences on adult relationships. it is such an excellent book. highly recommend.

Historia
Early one morning, less than a month after her 18th birthday, Alexandrina Victoria is roused from bed with the news that her uncle William IV has died, and she is now queen of England. The men who run the country have doubts about whether this sheltered young woman, who stands less than five feet tall, can rule the greatest nation in the world. Surely she must rely on her mother and her venal advisor, Sir John Conroy, or her uncle, the Duke of Cumberland, who are all too eager to relieve her of the burdens of power.

great writing, story difficult to believe **spoilers**
Revisado: 03-10-24
this was, hands down, excellent writing and an interesting story that pulled you along and made you want to keep reading. however, I found the romance between Albert and Victoria difficult to believe. it seems to have played out in a matter of days, which feels fast to fall in love. I know things were different back then, and I could believe that a marriage of political alliances (and lust) was forged in a few days, but love seems unlikely - especially on the heels of her feelings for Lord Melbourne, which also seemed unlikely, but at least they had a relationship that developed over time and love feelings were more believable. Regardless, it was a good listen with interesting character development.

entertaining overall
Revisado: 01-07-24
overall, this is an entertaining series. I do think it could have been one longer book instead of three shorter books. The one thing I really didn't like was the trajectory of the character, Ava. instead of growing and developing her over time, she devolved and made more and more foolish, immature decisions, which was really disappointing because she supposed to be a women in her mid-thirties. other than that, it was a good read/ listen.

Lily Weiss is her mother’s worst nightmare: thirty-two and single - the horror! She’s also a talented writer but hides behind a boring job at a science foundation. To her friends, she’s reliable and selfless, which is how she winds up a bridesmaid in five weddings in six weeks. Anything for her three best friends and two (younger) siblings, right? Even if her own love life is...well, she’d rather not talk about it. To keep her sanity, Lily needs a safe place to vent. And so her anonymous blog, Bridesmania, is born.

fun story except for two things
Revisado: 12-21-23
This was an otherwise fun story, but a couple things got under my skin.
#1
I was onboard with the main character's love interest until he got mad at her for her past sex life. even though it was a "misunderstanding" in the end, this was some sexist bullshit that really didn't fit with the message in the rest of the book. everyone has a past. this dude gets to be so mad that he quits speaking to her without even hearing her side of the story because she slept with someone he doesn't like at some unknown point in the past? and then his forgiveness makes it all better? W.T.F.
#2
I'm struggling with the lack of accountability for everyone's terrible behavior in this book. Yes, the main character wrote some nasty things. However, it was in response to people doing nasty things to her. I feel like those other characters weren't fully held accountable for their nasty behavior, and certainly not to the extent that the main character was. I guess I'm not feeling like a nasty, anonymous blog post is worse than being a nasty human in person? Perhaps they could all use some introspection and some new friends they don't feel compelled to be nasty to/about?

When Marilyn Kleinman is caught making out with the rabbi’s son in front of the whole congregation, her parents ship her off to her great-aunt Ada for the summer. If anyone can save their daughter’s reputation, it’s Philadelphia’s strict premier matchmaker. Either that or Marilyn can kiss college goodbye. To Marilyn’s surprise, Ada’s not the humorless septuagenarian her mother described. Not with that platinum-blonde hair, Hermès scarf, and Cadillac convertible. She’s sharp, straight-talking, takes her job very seriously, and abides by her own rules…mostly.
