Historia
Genetically engineered with partly alien DNA, Lieutenant Selene Genji is different from ordinary humans. And they hate her for it. Still, she’s spent her life trying to overcome society’s prejudice by serving in Earth’s Unified Fleet. Genji is stationed on a ship in orbit when humanity’s factional extremism on the planet reaches a boiling point, and she witnesses the utter annihilation of Earth. When the massive forces unleashed by Earth’s death warp space and time to hurl her forty years into the past, Genji is given a chance to try to change the future and save Earth.

I love JCs other works & I've listened to them all. This one is unbearable & I could not finish. The characters are dumber than a bag of rocks, the dialog is juvenile & I don't care if they succeed or not. Just stay away.

Dumb and Dumber
Revisado: 06-23-23
Everything about this book is horrid. The premise is not believable, characters are strait out of some bad Samurai movie, the dialogue stilted and the pace is glacial (listened at 2x speed). Even the great RCB could not save this turkey.

Historia
This volume, aimed at the general audience, presents life and times of the amazing animals that inhabited Earth more than 500 million years ago. The Cambrian Period was a critical time in Earth's history. During this immense span of time nearly every modern group of animals appeared. Although life had been around for more than 2 million millennia, Cambrian rocks preserve the record of the first appearance of complex animals with eyes, protective skeletons, antennae, and complex ecologies.

The print version apparently has tons of photos and illustrations that directly relate to the fauna being described in exquisite detail. Without the visuals there is no context for the differences among species or of all the many animals found in different rock layers. It's a good book, but I returned the audiobook and will get the print version.

I'm done with John Corey
Revisado: 03-28-23
I've listened to all the JC books and loved the early ones, tolerated the later ones and am fed up with the last one. [Minor spoiler alert] JC spends the first part of the book reminding everyone how smart he is and denying over and over that he'll take a job we all know he will take, and he does of course. He continues to remind us of how smart he is in the second part while telling us over and over again how he's going to take down the bad guys. When, in the remarkably short and predictable final part with a little action, all his plans go sideways he still manages to win it all and ride off into the sunset (sunrise in this case) just because he's the great JC as he reminds us again. Scott Brick does his usual amazing narration, but that's no longer enough. So I'm done.

Historia
The war should have been over. But it’s not for a group of nationalists grabbing for control. It’s been two weeks since a missile with a nuclear warhead tore through the planetary defenses in the most blistering large-scale attack ever committed in the history of the Gaia system. Commander Dunstan Park of the Rhodian navy has been handpicked to command an experimental cruiser that could dictate the course of the escalating conflict. All he has to do is keep the ship from falling into the wrong hands.

Excellent series
Revisado: 05-08-22
A very enjoyable book and series. While the lack of a consistent narrator is unfortunate, Mr. Jackson is not THAT bad (I've heard much worse) and trashing the book overall due to the reader is unfair. It's still a good installment in the series & I'm looking forward to the next one.

Mars is changing. Seemingly overnight the once "Red" planet is turning to gray. Something is happening, something unnatural. A team of, literally, rocket scientists figure out a way to send a probe, very fast, to Mars to determine how and why it is changing. However, when the probe is destroyed well short of the formerly red planet, it's apparent that Mars is being used as a staging ground. The only viable target for that staging ground is Earth.

OK, except......
Revisado: 02-09-22
Even for J.R. this is way over the top with jargon, so much so that it slowed the pace down to a near crawl in some spots. I doubt that today most people need a detailed dive into routers and Cat5 wiring. However, the biggest flaw was the "magic wand" ending.

Historia
Neanderthals have developed a radically different civilization on a parallel Earth. A Neanderthal physicist, Ponter Boddit, accidentally passes from his universe into a Canadian underground research facility. Fortunately, a team of human scientists, including expert paleo-anthropologist Mary Vaughan, promptly identifies and warmly receives Ponter. Solving the language problem and much else is a mini-computer, called a Companion, implanted in the brain of every Neanderthal. But it can't help his fellow scientist back in his world, Adikor Huld, when the authorities charge Adikor with his murder.

Hugo Winner???
Revisado: 10-24-15
It must have been slim pickings when they handed this book a Hugo. The physics in the beginning was OK and that added a star to my my otherwise one star rating. Going downhill from there, the author then embraces the discredited 1970's era theory that blood-thirsty modern humans alone exterminated the ice age mega fauna through deliberate over hunting and also slaughtered all the peaceful & noble neanderthals in their spare time. In addition, the characters were shallow & a bit dimwitted for supposed scientists. Lastly, the narrator pace & diction was really bad. I listened at double speed & kept hoping for a turnaround that never came.

Historia
It used to be that to diagnose an illness, interpret legal documents, analyze foreign policy, or write a newspaper article you needed a human being with specific skills - and maybe an advanced degree or two. These days, high-level tasks are increasingly being handled by algorithms that can do precise work not only with speed but also with nuance. These "bots" started with human programming and logic, but now their reach extends beyond what their creators ever expected.

Boring

This is OK I guess if you want a superficial survey of how/when algorithms became so pervasive, but boring if you actually want to know anything about the structure/logic of the algorithms themselves.

Outstanding, Great, Phenomenal....Etc.
Revisado: 08-07-14
While I always rate my books, I seldom write a review. However, the amazing qualities of this book deserves one. This by far one of the most enjoyable books I've ever encountered and don't worry about "getting" all the game & movie references, it's not that big a deal relative to the overall story. I'm no youngster, having grown up in the late 60's/early 70's & thoroughly enjoyed it. I've recommended it to others & everyone loved it regardless of age. Wil Wheaton does an incredible job as usual. Bottom line...LISTEN TO THIS BOOK....period
