Historia
At long last, Lady Sybil has lured her husband, Sam Vimes, on a well-deserved and long-overdue holiday. But for the commander of the City Watch, a vacation in the country is anything but relaxing. The balls, the teas, the muck—not to mention all that fresh air and birdsong—are more than a bit taxing on a cynical city-born and -bred copper.

This is the audiobook version to listen to
Revisado: 12-29-24
I like these audiobook readings by Jon Culshaw (I believe) and Bill Nighy.
This is the version of the story you want, because it’s so much easier to listen to than the other version I’ve heard.
The story is fun and exciting as usual.

Historia
The second in beloved and bestselling fantasy grandmaster Sir Terry Pratchett's beloved Discworld novels starring the young witch Tiffany Aching. Tiffany Aching is ready to begin her apprenticeship in magic. She expects spells and magic—not chores and ill-tempered nanny goats! Surely there must be more to witchcraft than this. What Tiffany doesn't know is that an insidious, disembodied creature is pursuing her.

Very enjoyable

I think Indra Varma does a great job as narrator, and I like the other voices too.
A wonderful story with lots of insights and humor, like all of Terry Pratchett’s books.

Historia
This lush and haunting novel tells of a city steeped in decadent pleasures and of a man, proud and defiant, caught in a web of murder and betrayal. It is 1833. In the midst of Mardi Gras, Benjamin January, a Creole physician and music teacher, is playing piano at the Salle d'Orleans when the evening's festivities are interrupted - by murder. The ravishing Angelique Crozat, a notorious octoroon who travels in the city's finest company, has been strangled to death.

Julie Newcomb has been called back to the birthplace of her worst memories, to be a companion to the one person she fears most. The truth lies somewhere on her grandmother's crumbling plantation, as real and terrifying as the two skeletons lying together in the swampy shadows of Deadman's Hollow.

Dark and spooky
Revisado: 09-25-24
As usual, Barbara Rosenblat’s narration is excellent.
This story is darker than any of the Elizabeth Peters stories, but was still engrossing and twisty.

A great story, but the narrator didn’t do such a good job
Revisado: 08-23-24
I love this story! A great adventure, and full of fun facts and delightfully erudite references as well as some sweet insights into living in harmony with the land.
The biggest annoyance to me was that the narrator mispronounced the name of a major character.
Catriona is an unusual name in the U.S. , that’s true, but I believe the proper pronunciation is “Ka-TREE-na” and not katroyna.
Also, I think Praxiteles is pronounced “Prax-IT-el-ees” but that’s not as big a concern as the name isn’t used as much.
It’s too late now, I guess, but I wish the narrator had found a way to say the words right.

Though he may not look the part, Madoc Rhys is a Mountie - and his keen sense of detection tells him it's time to ask Janet Wadman to marry him. They have just gotten engaged when Christmas rolls around, and Janet's boss invites them to his family estate for a last holiday fling before Janet leaves her job. After a long helicopter ride, they are at Graylings, ancestral home of the Condryckes, a family so strange that Canada's shortest Mountie fits right in. There is a psychic old woman, an erudite butler, and a family patriarch.

A classic Christmas country-house mystery — in Canada
Revisado: 08-05-24
During a Christmas visit to an elegant manor house in Canada, the appearance of a ghostly ship on the bay heralds misfortune and sudden death.
Inspector Madoc Rhys (pronounced “Riss” by the narrator, which I’m still not used to hearing since I’ve always thought it was “Reese”) and his fiancée Jenny solve the perplexing case together.
However, the narrator does do a nice Welsh accent, I think.

Historia
Zilla Trott is pouring her cat some chamomile tea when the drifter appears in her kitchen. He is grubby and crude - not at all the kind of person you'd usually find in the pleasant town of Lobelia Falls - but something about him intrigues the aging widow. Perhaps it's his rugged good looks, or the way he seems to come from another time and place. Or perhaps it's the fact that he's been dead for nearly a century.

Screwball mystery at its most amusing
Revisado: 07-30-24
This loopy cast of characters had me grinning all the way through the story!
Something is rotten in the mincemeat factory—a dastardly spy is trying to steal the secret recipe for Mother Matilda’s Mincemeat Pies!
Add in a gangland-style shootout in front of a yarn shop, and an artistic landlady whose creative vision encompasses all the exciting possibilities of plastic flamingos, and you’ll smile all the way through this tale of rural Canadian skulduggery.
The narrator did an acceptable job.
