Historia
When high school senior Charlotte agrees to babysit the Wilbanks twins, she plans to put the six-year-olds to bed early and spend a quiet night studying: the SATs are tomorrow, and checking the Native American/Alaskan Native box on all the forms doesn’t mean jack if you choke on test day. But tomorrow is also Halloween, and the twins are eager to show off their costumes—Ron is a nurse, in an old-fashioned white skirt-uniform, and Desi has an Authentic Squaw costume, complete with buckskin and feathered headdress. Excitement is in the air.

Start strong and runs out of gas
Revisado: 09-26-24
Really enjoyed the first half of this book. I was surprised at how quickly I got through it then the second half felt like I couldn’t wait for it to be over the logic and willing suspension disbelief just doesn’t hold the further you get into the book. The uncertainty and ambiguity Doesn’t help with the narrative.

Historia
In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror flick. The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot.

SIGH… nothing happens until last chapter
Revisado: 07-28-24
I was so excited for this release having enjoyed all of Tremblay’s other books. But this was a really difficult bridge to cross. The story has so much potential that takes way too long to actually start to manifest into anything. Without spoilers - really nothing important happens until the last chapter of the book. The audio version is really difficult to track. Not only does it switch recording formats (which gets super annoying) - but the audio quality drastically varies from chapter to chapter. Also the editor’s idea to have the sound of people flipping pages while reading the script eventually starts to sound like nails on a chalkboard hearing it so loudly so many times. Ultimately… why couldn’t we have had the final chapter as the middle point of the book and see where the characters go from there? Would have been far more interesting.

Historia
Fleeing a troubled past, Sarah Faust has found the perfect place to begin a new life. Tucked away on a charming side street and surrounded by lush grounds, the neglected 300-year-old townhouse in the port city of Charleston offers a refuge and a place to start over. But all is not as it seems at Five Rue Lane, and she soon finds that her new house harbors something that has been there for a very long time. Something that refuses to stay buried.

Underwhelming
Revisado: 05-28-23
I enjoy a good haunted house story but this one lacked any of the shock, surprise, excitement and scares you’d hope for. The story, writing and narration was pretty flat and dull. Found it really hard to get into the book or connect to the characters which felt extremely one dimensional and cliche.

Historia
A strange plague called the "Gets" is decimating humanity on a global scale. It causes people to forget - small things at first, like where they left their keys... then the not-so-small things like how to drive, or the letters of the alphabet. Then their bodies forget how to function involuntarily - and there is no cure. But now, far below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, deep in the Marianas Trench, an heretofore unknown substance hailed as "ambrosia" has been discovered - a universal healer, from initial reports.

Event Horizon (Underwater)
Revisado: 02-06-23
This was a pleasurably gory book filled with extremely descriptive horrors. The story was intriguing, and the narration was outstanding.
Only complaint was the length and number of flashback scenes. But minor critique in an otherwise fun book.

WORST NARRATOR!
Revisado: 02-01-23
I was so excited for this sequel, having loved the first book. The good news is that the story holds up, a mix of mystery and thriller, that keeps the listener/reader engaged the bad news… they hired Bronson Pinchot as the narrator. It is hard, ridiculously hard, to stomach his narration. he makes every female character sound like a ditzy 19-year-old sorority cliché. And his attempts at vocalizing characters of color comes off as severely racially, insensitive and stereotypical please… Stop giving this man books to read!!

Historia
Seasoned music writer Dan Ozzi chronicles this embattled era in punk. Focusing on eleven prominent bands who made the jump from indie to major, Sellout charts the twists and turns of the last “gold rush” of the music industry, where some groups “sold out” and rose to surprise super stardom, while others buckled under mounting pressures. Sellout is both a gripping history of the music industry’s evolution, and a punk rock lover’s guide to the chaotic darlings of the post-grunge era.

You’re going to wish this book was twice as long
Revisado: 11-10-21
I learned about this book from the authors interview on the podcast 60 songs that explain the 90s. To say I devoured this book would be putting it mildly. A highly entertaining, and very nostalgic coverage that went so in depth and behind the scenes at some of the most groundbreaking and iconic punk bands of the last several decades. The only critique, is that I wish the book was twice as long and covered twice as many stories!

This was a fun meta horror book pulling from your favorite franchise such as Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Well written and well performed. Ending was a bit drawn out but overall highly enjoyable book.
