Historia
I know my brother is dead. But sometimes Mama gets confused. There’s plenty about the grownup world that six-year-old Aoife doesn’t understand. Like what happened to her big brother Theo and why her mama is in the hospital instead of home where she belongs. Uncle Donny says she just needs to be patient, but Aoife’s sure her mama won’t be able to come home until Aoife learns what really happened to her brother. The trouble is no one wants to talk about Theo because he was murdered. But by whom?

Unexpectedly great read
Revisado: 04-21-22
This was a freebie, and, honestly, a 6 year old tries to solve the mystery of her possibly murdered brother? BUT this book was completely unexpected. I'm still amazed that a story could touch on so many potentially heavy topics from the simple, innocent, perspective of a child. I think the child should have been portrayed just a bit older, but definitely 5 stars. loved it!

Paint your toes. Pick up the wrong coffee and bagel order. Drive from Brooklyn to Jersey in traffic so slow you want to tear your hair out. It’s amazing all the useless things I can accomplish while on hold for three hours with customer service. Three hours when I should be getting the Date-in-a-Box website ready to launch at the big business expo in a few days. Except my shiny new website is glitching, and my inner rage-monster is ready to scorch some earth...when he finally picks up. Not the robot voice I expected but a real live human named Kal.

Historia
Lamb traces the self-discovery of David Lamb, a narcissistic middle-aged man with a tendency toward dishonesty, in the weeks following the disintegration of his marriage and the death of his father. Hoping to regain some faith in his own goodness, he turns his attention to Tommie, an awkward and unpopular 11-year-old girl. Lamb is convinced that he can help her avoid a destiny of apathy and emptiness and even comes to believe that his devotion to Tommie is in her best interest.

This book should come with a trigger warning
Revisado: 11-01-21
This book meanders so closely to the edge of something horrifying that it could almost be categorized as a thriller. I felt compelled to finish the book, just to be certain the worst scenario didn't occur, but felt shameful anyway, just having listened while the author tiptoes around such a topic.
The narration, however, was great. It was, in fact, the only redeeming factor.

Not a mystery but not predictable
Revisado: 10-22-21
What Comes After is not exactly a mystery or a page turner, but it is not without merit. The story is more about defining family and offering kindness in the face of grief and judgement. Some parts are a bit slow, but only if the reader is falsely expecting unseen plot twists and/or substantial drama.

Not exactly a "smash hit" but good
Revisado: 10-22-21
Calling this first title a "smash hit" seems a bit generous as I'm not sure I would seek to read any more of the series. However, the main character is memorable enough to easily carry the listener through at least this book. She is young but witty and helps to fill any gaps or confusion along the storyline with her humor and innocent hopefulness.

Too Good to Be True is 'good enough'
Revisado: 10-22-21
Too Good to Be True is good enough to keep the reader interested with some exciting plot twists and an unpredictable outcome, but I'm a little disheartened by the false depiction of obsessive compulsive disorder. Although I am no psychiatrist, I know that OCD rarely has a singular, direct "cause" and even more rarely magically disappears.

It is clear from the summary that this book covers the topic of abuse, but it should come with a trigger warning for those sensitive to childhood sexual abuse, incest, neglect and rape.

Cheesy but great
Revisado: 10-22-21
All You Need is Love is a little cheesy, but covers the difficult topic of loss and disappointment in a sweet but respectful manner. This underlying message in this book is one of kindness, patience and support.

Historia
To the Green-Eyed Lovebird: We met 15 years ago, almost to the day, when I moved my stuff into the NYU dorm room next to yours at Senior House. You called us fast friends. I like to think it was more. We lived on nothing but the excitement of finding ourselves through music (you were obsessed with Jeff Buckley), photography (I couldn’t stop taking pictures of you), hanging out in Washington Square Park, and all the weird things we did to make money. I learned more about myself that year than any other. Yet, somehow, it all fell apart.

If you aren't in to basketball...
Revisado: 05-10-21
If you aren't a basketball or even simply a sports fan, you probably won't enjoy this book. Without spoiling the content, the "climax" of this book is hugely disappointing and done in a way that feels emotionless and nonchalant - an afterthought, with no real resolution. The reader becomes invested in the buildup of the character... then is left asking, "what?!" I suppose the only redeeming quality might be found if the reader enjoys basketball.
