Historia
Someone is telling the story of the life of Charlie Barnes, and it doesn't appear to be going well. Too often divorced, discontent with life's compromises, and in a house he hates, this lifelong schemer and eternal romantic would like out of his present circumstances and into the American dream. But when the twin calamities of the Great Recession and a cancer scare come along to compound his troubles, his dreams dwindle further, and an infinite past full of forking paths quickly tapers to a black dot.

In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Loved the premise, loved the story, loved the outcome. If you are newly in love or been with the same person for years, this is a story for you. The kids, the in-laws, the siblings, all believable and endearing, even at their worst. Franni is my favorite. Alice is totally someone I could be BFFs with, Gina too. Enjoy, you won't be sorry.

Historia
Hailed by The New York Times as "a marvel of storytelling", The Things They Carried’s portrayal of the boots-on-the-ground experience of soldiers in the Vietnam War is a landmark in war writing. Now, three-time Emmy Award winner-Bryan Cranston, star of the hit TV series Breaking Bad, delivers an electrifying performance that walks the book’s hallucinatory line between reality and fiction and highlights the emotional power of the spoken word.

Eduational and touching and thought provoking
Revisado: 05-06-16
I greatly enjoyed this listen, Bryan Cranston's narration is smooth. The stories were revealing to a child born during this war to a father who was there and never really spoke of it, but carried a hatred that was deep and foreign to all of us. Weaving in and out realty and truth was a bit unnerving, particularly the story of the girlfriend from OH who goes all Apocalypse Now on us. You have great empathy for these man boys who are fighting in a war that is so far away and so far from any type of war they have known. The only thing I really struggled with the author's disdain for his own sense of honor and duty.

Historia
Boisterous, ribald, and ultimately shattering, Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest has left an indelible mark on the literature of our time. Turning conventional notions of sanity and insanity on their heads, the novel tells the unforgettable story of a mental ward and its inhabitants, especially tyrannical Big Nurse Ratched and Randle Patrick McMurphy, the brawling, fun-loving new inmate who resolves to oppose her.

The narration is worth the listen
Revisado: 04-14-16
Written at a time of great change in America and to our American culture, this book really is a reflection of the angst and worries in the minds of middle aged Americans at that time. The growing concerns about female equality and its impact on the perceived value of men, the rise of technology and the growing power of the US government are all reflected in tales of the men in this asylum. The language, the imagery and the power of the narrator and the music make this a worthwhile listen. I am glad I listened to this book before seeing the movie, but do want to watch the movie now, as I can see why Jack Nicholson was cast as McMurphy.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

An inside look at WWII
Revisado: 12-15-15
I enjoyed this book very much, with the Uncle being my favorite character. There are many reviews that expressed dissatisfaction with the non-linear approach, but once I got the hang of it, I really enjoyed it and found that it helped me to not zone out as can often happen when listening in the car for a significant time. Much like The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, the story puts a human face to the rank and file of the Nazi regime and gives a nod to those Germans who gave the world (and the Nazis) much of the technology that our modern life depends on today.
