Historia
A thirty-four-year-old American woman—a secret agent—is sent to do dirty work in France. “Sadie Smith” is how the narrator introduces herself to her lover, to the rural commune of French subversives on whom she is keeping tabs, and to the reader. Sadie has met her love, Lucien, a young and well-born Parisian, by “cold bump”—making him believe the encounter was accidental. Like everyone Sadie targets, Lucien is useful to her and used by her. Sadie operates by strategy and dissimulation, based on what her “contacts”—shadowy figures in business and government—instruct.

Strange story and not all that compelling
Revisado: 01-21-25
I listened to the whole book on Audible because my book club was doing this book but I can’t say I loved it. It was quite odd and not all that compelling and I only finished it because of my book club.

I learned the 2000 most common Japanese words, some more useful than others. I found it helpful to listen to each chapter twice in succession so once I learned a new word, I would hear it again soon afterwards.

Historia
Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

Historia
When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

Epic book by a brilliant writer, who makes everything compelling
Revisado: 10-08-23
I have read quite a few books by Walter Isaacson including his Steve Jobs book and now Elon Musk, which is just as gripping and fascinating. He learned so much about the characters of the people he is writing about, but also about business and technology, and what is going on in the world in so many ways. I can’t recommend this enough.

Historia
Traveling across millennia, weaving the experiences and world views of cultures both extinct and extant, The Invention of Yesterday shows that the engine of history is not so much heroic (battles won), geographic (farmers thrive), or anthropogenic (humans change the planet) as it is narrative. Many thousands of years ago, when we existed only as countless small autonomous bands of hunter-gatherers widely distributed through the wilderness, we began inventing stories - to organize for survival, to find purpose and meaning, to explain the unfathomable.

Fascinating and very pithy - but not too heavy going
Revisado: 09-19-23
It’s not easy to write a world history, and make it so fact filled and compelling at the same time, and I dare say fun to read also. But the author was wildly successful in accomplishing all this, and I really enjoyed every moment of this book. I highly recommend it to anybody who is interested in history and wants learn.

Working and living alone in a city where it is not easy to form new relationships, she has little regular contact with anyone other than her editor, Hijiri, a woman of the same age but with a very different disposition. Wow only a Japanese author could write this
Revisado: 02-26-23
I am a student of Japan and love everything about Japan so I really enjoyed this book. But someone who has not spent extensive time in Japan and doesn’t understand Japanese culture would not be able to appreciate this book the way I do. It’s very noir and not much happens but that’s the whole point. Beautifully written. Love this book.

Historia
Every moment in our life happens only once, and if we let it slip away, we lose it forever - an idea captured by the Japanese phrase ichigo ichie (pronounced itchy-GO itchy-A). Often spoken in Japan when greeting someone or saying goodbye, to convey that the encounter is unique and special, it is a tenet of Zen Buddhism and is attributed to a 16th-century master of the Japanese tea ceremony, or "ceremony of attention", whose intricate rituals compel us to focus on the present moment.

Fascinating book about the young generation of China
Revisado: 12-12-21
I read a lot of books about China but most are more historical, while this is about the youth of China today (or at least in 2017). The “me” generation of young Chinese born after 1990, most of whom are so-called “little emperors” because they were born only children and doted upon by six adults - their parents and both sets of grandparents. They are super ambitious and hard-working and will do anything to get ahead and to live better than their parents who were in most cases peasants from rural China. I highly recommend this book!
