Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Beautiful saga based on fact
Revisado: 01-26-25
I prefer long audio books -- at least 20 hours. This guarantees a story full of twists and turns, with the additional benefit of not being ripped off by needing to buy multiple books in a series. Not only was the story full of twists and turns, it educated me more on Indian culture and history and on medical practice. The characters were lovable and the prose beautiful. The ending was unexpected! I learned the book was also read by the author. So not only a gifted writer, but also a talented reader -- even was able to pull off a Scottish accent. I am going to listen to this book again, savoring it.

Best book in "Grave* series
Revisado: 05-24-24
I enjoyed this story,,.a real page turner. But for two reasons, I would have given it 5 stars. 1. The reader. The author presented the main character, Harper, as emotional and passionate. Unfortunately the reader read as if she were phlegmatic. Reader also wasn't consistent with the voices she used for other characters. Don't get me wrong, I listened to worse readers. 2, Things didn't add up with the resolution of a couple of the mysteries. Kinda sloppy,,.seemed like the author didn't take the time to flesh out the mechanics of a couple resolution events.

I loved everything about this novel. A very believable story about a modern day civil war in a Democratic country over taken by mob rule. Anyone that has never experienced war on their doorstep, can by reading this.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Clever Story but Tedious
Revisado: 03-12-24
Very unique plot. Too many characters and too many battles. A few were connected and critical the story but others seemed to be fillers. Made me think the author had set a goal of no less than a set number of words. Tedious battles....

Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.

Couldn't Stop Listening
Revisado: 02-26-23
A real "page turner". I was listening well into the wee hours and thinking "wow, wow, wow!!!" Great story but also lovely prose full of clever simmilies and metaphors. The reader was pretty good. I didn't give her 5/5 because I didn't like how she made most of the young girls sound like valley girls and she didn't do the men's voices deep enough.

Historia
Corbin College, not quite upstate New York, winter 1959-1960: Ruben Blum, a Jewish historian—but not an historian of the Jews—is co-opted onto a hiring committee to review the application of an exiled Israeli scholar specializing in the Spanish Inquisition. When Benzion Netanyahu shows up for an interview, family unexpectedly in tow, Blum plays the reluctant host to guests who proceed to lay waste to his American complacencies. Mixing fiction with nonfiction, the campus novel with the lecture, The Netanyahus is a wildly inventive comedy of blending, identity, and politics.

Perplexed as to why it received an award
Revisado: 02-18-23
Very thin story. Chapters could have stood alone as short stories, which this "novel" should have been -- a collection of short stories. Sure it'll make you chuckle here and there, but...really,..a Pulitzer? Serious readers are drawn to major-award-winning novels. I feel cheated. Speaking of readers... there were three. Seemed like one, which didn't work when it came to dialogue, even between men and women. I became confused about who was who. Sound effects were silly and distracting. Music not mixed well with reader... annoying.

A wealthy and notorious clan, the Bellefleurs live in a region not unlike the Adirondacks, in an enormous mansion on the shores of mythic Lake Noir. They own vast lands and profitable businesses, they employ their neighbors, and they influence the government. A prolific and eccentric group, they include several millionaires, a mass murderer, a spiritual seeker who climbs into the mountains looking for God, a wealthy noctambulist who dies of a chicken scratch.

Listened to it Three Times
Revisado: 01-30-23
JC Oates does an excellent job of weaving the lives of many generations of the Bellefleur family. One is sometimes confused but it all comes together in the final chapters. However the origins of a couple of them remains a mystery...adds even more intrigue. JC is a master when it comes to unique character creation. This is especially true here, where there are so many of them. I now know them intimately, especially Gideon and Leah and their children; as well as the Bellefleur Manor estate but floor plans and maps would have been very good. I bought the paper book, and it only had the family tree. Audible needs to provide photos, diagrams etc for their audible books in an electronic folder. Also, this book should include the names of the chapters in the chapter folder. This would help with navigation. XE Sands did an A+++ job.
PS I love you, Joyce.

A women's need for love creates a mess that keeps getting messier. JC Oates' talent for weird plots, interesting characters, and imagery is at its best. The main reader is fantastic with unique voices for each character and a dramatic flair.

If you want to know Elvis at 42.
Revisado: 10-30-22
This is the chronology of the last nine months of Elvis's life viewed from the eyes of the woman that was most intimate with him at that time. You will learn things you might never have known about him. It is sad that, upon his death, the woman that loved him and found him comatose was treated as little more than his latest girlfriend and marginalized after his death. She received zero from his estate despite the fact that they were engaged...she had a ring.
