Historia
Winner of the National Book Award when it was first published in 1964, Herzog traces five days in the life of a failed academic whose wife has recently left him for his best friend. Through the device of letter writing, Herzog movingly portrays both the internal life of its eponymous hero and the complexity of modern consciousness.

Dull dull dull
Revisado: 08-17-11
So I really tried.....I got through about 5 hours but I just couldn't continue - nothing happens
I liked the idea of a main character who spends most of his time writing letters, the style and narration are good but don't say you were not warned. It is so incredibly dull.

Historia
An elaboration of some of David Leavitt's early stories, Equal Affections - his second novel - is about the family of a woman, Louise Cooper, who is dying of cancer. The family has other problems: Nat, Louise's husband, is having an affair; her daughter April, a lesbian with a thriving career as a singer, finds herself pregnant; and her son, Danny, also gay, is worried about his lover's commitment to him.

Touching and poignant
Revisado: 05-17-11
This novel follows the four members of the Cooper family through the mother's illness. The narrator is very good, and really adds to the experience giving each character a unique voice. This is helped by Leavitt's perfectly targeted style and each character is so perfectly realised that you feel like you could recognise them. The book leaves a long-lasting afterglow. Highly recommended, along with all of Leavitt's other work.

Historia
Freedom comically and tragically captures the temptations and burdens of too much liberty: the thrills of teenage lust, the shaken compromises of middle age, the wages of suburban sprawl, the heavy weight of empire. In charting the mistakes and joys of Freedom's intensely realized characters, as they struggle to learn how to live in an ever more confusing world, Franzen has produced an indelible and deeply moving portrait of our time.

Try The Corrections Instead
Revisado: 02-23-11
So I am a huge fan of Jonathan Franzen, I like the audio book format and the narrator (as other reviewers have noted) is excellent. However, this was an ordeal to finish. The book and the characters are angry, bitter and I didn't want to spend any more time with them. Give this a miss and try the corrections instead.

Captivating, disturbing, but ultimately satisfying

This is an audiobook which is done very well. The accent of the reader adds to the drama and this title is very much recommended.

Hats of to Anthony for doing this book and there is much to be commended in this story. Overall I appreciate the book but I didn't finish it. I felt a little bit like I was listening to a speech and found it hard to connect with it.

Adult book about the pleasures of knowledge
Revisado: 05-20-10
I am a huge fan of A.S. Byatt's Posession, and there are many similarities in this latest book. As an audiobook, the Narrator does a wonderful job with many different characters and story threads.
However, be warned, this is long - over 31 hours, and follows the lives of two generations of a constellation of families living in the English countryside at the turn of the 20th century. This is a very English novel, full of cups of tea, letters and London's museums.
Byatt is brilliant on the gathering forces of England and Germany at the beginning of the 20th century and despite the many different story threads and length I very much enjoyed the time I spend with this book.

Historia
Swann's Way is Marcel Proust's literary masterpiece and the first part of the multivolume audiobook Remembrance of Things Past. In the opening volume, the narrator travels back in time to recall his childhood and to introduce the listener to Charles Swann, a wealthy friend of the family and celebrity in the Parisian social scene. He again travels back, this time to the youth of Charles Swann in the French town of Combray, to tell the story of the love affair that took place before his own birth.

Perfect for walking
Revisado: 02-17-10
One of the things I love about audiobooks is listening to them as I walk. I think this audiobook is perfectly suited to walking, as Proust is often describing his thoughts as he walks. I have downloaded other versions of Swan's way, but this one is the best. The narrator is a little fast sometimes, however given the length - this is not much of a problem. Overall, this is highly recommended and I have totally enjoyed it!

I loved it so much that when my ipod said that I only had 20 mins left of the story I could not bring myself to finish it, and it took a full week before I could bring myself to have it ended.
The narrator does a terrific job, and it very well produced. It is a rich and dazzling story - highly recommended.
