Loved it!
Revisado: 04-03-25
I loved this one! Really helps you understand Haymitch as a character and brings the whole saga together for me. Also, the narrator was incredible! Actually sounded like young Haymitch and gave a great performance. Can’t wait for the movie!

Meh

Sort of repetitive. There were a couple of points that were beneficial for me. But overall, I didn’t feel like it was as life changing as I thought it would be. I was too bored to even finish the whole book.

Not very useful information
Revisado: 11-10-24
I started listening because they used words like “stress-free” and “seamless,” and I’ve had a hard time trying to work out how to move to the UK as a retired person. But I’ve listened to several now. They are really too short to give much information, and all the info I’ve heard is either common knowledge, or something I had learned within 5 minutes of googling “how to move to UK.” I guess I was just hoping for more help with the things that aren’t as obvious, like how they say “flat” instead of “apartment.” I learned that when I was 8.

"We have to test everything. I thank God for anybody anywhere who is pointing people to the mysteries of God. But those people would all tell you to think long and hard about what they are saying and doing and creating. Test it. Probe it. Do that to this book. Don't swallow it uncritically. Think about it. Wrestle with it. Just because I'm a Christian and I'm trying to articulate a Christian worldview doesn't mean I've got it nailed. I'm contributing to the discussion. God has spoken, and the rest is commentary, right?" (Rob Bell)

Absolutely beautiful
Revisado: 06-19-23
Incredible and life altering. One thought that stuck out for me was that, if God deems you worthy of love, then you are. Stop trying to earn it. Stop insisting that you don’t deserve it. Stop jumping through hoops to attain it. It’s already yours! Wow. Seems simple, but it hit me right in the soul.

Incredible!
Revisado: 02-26-23
The obsessive bible worship that i grew up with was difficult to move on from. And when I did get past it, I cringed every time someone talked about the bible. It always seemed to be used in justification of some kind of atrocity or toxic mindset. This book really helped me see the bible as beautiful and full of news that is genuinely good again. It’s things like this that help me separate the trauma and toxicity of my fundamentalist upbringing from the truly good and loving things that Christianity can be. And Rob is an incredible narrator!

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Fascinating!
Revisado: 02-16-23
I listened to this in phases because it’s a LOT of information. But I loved every second. He made me think so much more deeply about how the brain works with trauma. He explains extremely complex ideas and biological processes in ways that anyone can understand, even without a background in anything to do with psychology or biology. The book helped me develop tools for handling my own trauma, as well. Even just listening to the book was cathartic. I understand myself and others so much more now. Incredible. I can’t recommend it enough!

Revisado: 02-16-23
I didn’t think that the book was terrible or that his voice was terrible. He’s actually an excellent reader. But the book sort of hopped all over from one point to another. It didn’t really help me feel differently…just sort of tried to convince me why I should. But the problem is that I know why I should feel differently. I’m able to recognize that my anxiety isn’t rational. I’m still anxious, though! I don’t know, maybe it just wasn’t the right book for me.

I liked the story, and all the different voices. They all read very well. But sometimes a single voice would sound as if it were a recording of a recording, or was very far away, or spoken over a phone call. By the end of it, I was so annoyed with the shrill phone call sound of Emma’s voice that I almost didn’t finish the book. And it hadn’t started out that way!
