I enjoyed the descriptions that made this all too real. The raw emotions between Mother and Son. A heartbreaking yet powerful story

God bless this author for she is courageous and brave beyond words. She is an inspiration to us all and I feel more confident in myself than ever going into these doctors appointments. You don’t know what you don’t know.

As a person who has trauma related issues around relationships and as a person who is not yet a parent, I believe I can utilize what I learned in this book to better connect to myself and others. I enjoyed the back and forth informative dialogue between Oprah and Dr Perry because it was intriguing and moving. I found myself in tears often from the unthinkable experiences endured by innocent children in which these stories were examples of how trauma is stored in the brain and expressed later in life and how young children attempt to “self regulate” in often unhealthy ways. As a society we all must educate ourselves in mental health awareness and trauma related behaviors so we can begin to reconnect and begin healing.

This book is worth a weekend and then an re-read.
It brought me to tears and I enjoyed it’s unapologetic amount of culture that is seen through the eyes of young and old Natives.
Many uncomfortable events that are a result of colonization and through the loss of language and identity occur in flashbacks around these characters. It’s an intriguing read that leaves you wanting to continue reading despite its graphic nature.
