Historia
You might think a book with no pictures seems boring and serious. Except . . . here's how books work. Everything written on the page has to be said by the person reading it aloud. Even if the words say…. BLORK. Or BLUURF. Even if the words are a preposterous song about eating ants for breakfast, or just a list of astonishingly goofy sounds like BLAGGITY BLAGGITY and GLIBBITY GLOBBITY. Cleverly irreverent and irresistibly silly, The Book with No Pictures is one that kids will beg to hear again and again. (And parents will be happy to oblige.)

This is 9 minutes long!
Revisado: 02-03-24
Beware. This is a silly, 9 minute children's book that is not suited to be an audio book. As much as I loved Novak's first, true book- I can't say the same for this one. It was 9 minutes of ridiculousness- might work as a written short story for very young children but it is not appropriate for Audible.

I listen to a lot of thrillers and this one was excellent- cerebral & unpredictable. The narrator did a great job differentiating characters with his voice.

Historia
Jane’s days at a Midwest insurance company are perfectly ordinary. She blends in well, unremarkably pretty in her floral-print dresses and extra efficient at her low-level job. She’s just the kind of woman middle manager Steven Hepsworth likes - meek, insecure, and willing to defer to a man. No one has any idea who Jane really is. Least of all Steven. But plain Jane is hiding something. And Steven’s bringing out the worst in her.

I listened to this book faster than any other before. It was riveting. and unrepentant- many truths about what women deal with regularly. It was extreme and but also simultaneously, truthful. The protagonist is a sociopath- but her reactions to many situations are completely relatable. Scary. Wow.

Historia
In a vastly overpopulated near-future world, businesses have taken the place of governments and now hold all political power. States exist merely to ensure the survival of huge transnational corporations. Advertising has become hugely aggressive and boasts some of the world’s most powerful executives. Through advertising, the public is constantly deluded into thinking that all the products on the market improve the quality of life.

Inventive and Modern Science Fiction!
Revisado: 04-25-17
Any additional comments?
Many people urged me to read this classic by Frederick Pohl, but I resisted. Then, I finally gave it a listen and it was great! It was much more "modern" than a lot of the sci-fi from the 70s and it is relevant to issues that are important today. For example, we now have the technology to create Chicken Little and alleviate widespread hunger - but should we? There are also aspects about business, marketing and advertising that are more relevant and insightful today than ever. The story itself is a bit formulaic as compared to the world in which the characters are living. However, it was good enough to move the story along and keep the book interesting.

Historia
Nate Jackson’s Slow Getting Up is an unvarnished and uncensored memoir of everyday life in the most popular sports league in America - and the most damaging to its players - the National Football League. After playing college ball at a tiny Division III school, Jackson, a receiver, signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers, before moving to the Denver Broncos. For six seasons in the NFL as a Bronco, he alternated between the practice squad and the active roster, eventually winning a starting spot - a short, tenuous career emblematic of the average pro player.

If you love football, you should listen to this
Revisado: 04-03-17
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Everyone knows that football is dangerous and players often play while hurt, but this book gives new insight into what the average player endures to be part of the NFL. The narration (by Nate himself) is not so great but it is OK and doesn't detract too much from the story. This story manages to give insights into the NFL player life for non-superstars, while not being too graphic or explicit.
Highly recommended if you are a football buff!

If you could sum up The Legacy of the Dragon in three words, what would they be?
Cat and mouse thriller
Any additional comments?
The first book in the series (which I loved), was so gory that I took a break for a while and waited to read the second book. I needn't have done that, however, because the second book was so different; this book is more like an espionage novel and is more about the background and emotional legacy of the Dragon that got Paul to where he is.

Sexually explicit, gory & grisly Fun
Revisado: 06-10-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This story focuses on many of the seamy aspects of modern life and the people living it. The genre is best described as a combination of murder mystery & thriller laced with science fiction elements. I am no prude but the author has no holds barred when it comes to portraying prostitutes, homosexual sex and masturbation (among other things - including the excruciatingly gory descriptions of each murder). I spent a good deal of time cringing through the details of this book - but the story was so compelling that it was (just) worth it. The fact that the narrator's voice was rather girlish exacerbated the discomfort of listening to such a grisly story.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Yes! This would make a very good film if you are inclined towards gore-filled thrillers.

Historia
The Unfinished Clue is a clever and humorous murder mystery set at a British country estate in the 1930s. There, each of the invited guests, along with the victim's wife and the estate's staff members (the butler, the maids, the gardener), had good reason to hate the arrogant and abrasive victim. Sir Arthur Billington-Smith had successfully alienated each and every one of them.

Typical Victorian who-dunnit
Revisado: 04-12-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This a good, solid mystery in the Victorian England, houseful of suspects who-dunnit genre.
The narrator is good at voicing the different characters and so, although the story often plods along, he keeps things interesting. It is not a modern thriller with anything too outlandish; there are no guns, car chases, international spies...this is just a solid murder mystery with strongly written characters. I must admit that I found myself nodding off at times during this listen - but it was very good.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Good ending - unexpected.
