Honestly - this should have won a Hugo. I'm shocked this isn't more well known. A true masterpiece.

Historia
Just as Fred is settling down in his new abode, he receives word that a favor is being called in, one he promised to a dangerously powerful member of otherworldly royalty. Bracing danger, adventure, and unknown threats, Fred is instead asked to take on an entirely different role than anticipated. Acting as interim professor at one of the few universities for supernatural entities, Fred will have to navigate a strange environment, eccentric coworkers, and unenthusiastic students. Yet that alone won't be enough, for this college has more history than the tales in its tomes.

I honestly feel that this was the best of the series. Audible requires this review be at least 15 words.

The landlady insists her building is clean. Susan fears she’s going mad—until she makes a chilling discovery in the bonus room.

Excellent book about a slow descent into madness
Revisado: 08-03-23
This is another winner by Ben H Winters.
We follow Susan, her husband Alex and her bubbly little girl Emma as they move into an amazing Brooklyn apartment that seems almost too good to be true. Susan slowly becomes paranoid that maybe it really is.
Some might be turned off by the ending but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Listened in one day.

So I bought this on a lark, and I'm glad I did. I think I thought it would be more military Sci fi, which is fun if mostly brainless. I was wrong.
The first story was a comedy - I kinda felt like it was always on the edge of silly, but it never quite went that far. Just a bit ridiculous.
It was followed by a short story (all in the same overarching storyline), which was not at all a comedy. There was real pathos, real characters. It was *good*. The "bad" character had real motivations, and by the end of the story I wasn't sure which side I was on. And neither were the characters in the story, who understood each others' points of view. Wow.
All the stories have a touch of silly to them, but there's real character development here.
Bravo.

Passable suspense, terrible story.
Revisado: 04-02-22
I never leave negative reviews, but this time I thought I had no choice. this book was written a few short years after September 11th, and it shows, but that is no excuse for the racism and bigotry in this book. Spoilers ahead.
The story revolves around an Elon musk type figure looking to build a solar power satellite, and a shadowy cabal of evil Muslims who seek to stop him and kill tens of thousands of Americans. These Muslims meet in secret to plot against America in B-Movie fashion. The main evil Muslim isn't religious - he has a harem of women at least some of which seem to be sex slaves and drinks copious alcohol - but rather only wants to attack america to keep the west dependent on Arab oil. It's repeatedly implied that the only reason the Nine (the evil council of Muslims) want to attack America is for money.
In fact, all Muslims are evil in this book - one red herring, a character with the last name Mohammed, is shown to be a good man before being revealed to actually be a Baptist. I may be wrong, but I believe all evil characters are non-white - two henchmen are Hispanic low-lifes who work for the chief evil Muslim.
The one and only break from the racist plot in this story is that the damsel in distress is a black woman. Which brings us to the patriarchal aspect to the story: every woman in the book is sexed up. The senator, who got the job after her family member senator died, is hot for a presidential candidate and the Elon musk protagonist. The damsel is hot for the protagonist. Even the female FBI agent who is repeatedly described as sexy is hot for the damsel character.
Honestly, skip it. If I didn't get it for free I'd have demanded my money back.
