It took until Book 3 for me to care

Books one and two of this series almost had me giving up on the story. The characters were one dimensional, immature, and predictable. But by book three I finally cared about the characters enough to enjoy the story. I'm not sure if they went on the journey or I did but at least it finally worked out.

I listened to this series immediately following Meghan March's "The Mount Trilogy" and that might have contributed to my disappointment. The Mount series had a deeper and more interesting story although the female narration was lacking. In this series the narration was awesome but the story was flat.

TLDR: Narration was great but check out The Mount series for more interesting characters.

Based on other reviews I knew that this was not a complete story. It is the first of three parts that make up a whole story. It could have been one long book but, whatever, just know that you'll need to buy all three books to complete the story as one and two both end with a cliffhanger.

Joe Arden does a good job at narration but Grace Grant does not. Her attempts at a male voice often come out like a caricature of an 80 year old man. As you read this, do a vocal impression of a sick old man stooped over his cane and that's exactly what her voice sounds like when she is doing the voice of the male lead, the hero of the story! It was distracting throughout the series but I looked past it because the story was so engaging. If Andi Arndt or another competent female narrator did this series it would have easily been 5 stars and one I would listen to over and over.

This story had everything I was looking for: a great story with relatable characters, excellent narration, and financial support for the LGBTQ community through The Trevor Project and AIDS United. Thanks to John Oliver for making this happen!

The stories in the Beneath series end nicely within this book but, unlike the others, this story gets quite dark. There’s a level of violence that far exceeds what’s in the other stories. It’s the only thing that made this story drop from five to four stars.

I really enjoyed the couple and could relate to the heroine, Ari, better than most of the female lead characters in this series. And it was nice to end on Rhett’s story since he kept popping up in all the other books.

The only book of this series that I didn’t adore

Although the narration is still excellent, the story fell flat for me compared to the other Beneath books. The hero, Bishop, was cold and distant for the first half of the story. He didn’t come off as heroic so much as just weirdly always around when she was in trouble.

The heroine was unrelateable as she was too sheltered and naive and the situations she got herself into were too out there. It was all explained for the story but felt very unrealistic and tough to sympathize with.

Overall the book is ok but because the other Beneath books are excellent, this one comes up short in comparison.

As with all the books in this series, the characters are intriguing but this one came with an added twist of which man will she end up with and why/how? Great narration, too!

The narrators are a breath of fresh air because I've had a few listens lately with terrible narrators. This is my first book by the author and I purchased it because of the great reviews. While the story was pretty good, I wouldn't say it was amazing by any stretch. I couldn't relate to any of the main characters so everything seemed unrealistic to me. But it was still an entertaining story and deserves the solid 3 stars that I gave it.

This book was recommended to me by my boss who had heard the author speak at a conference. For the first two thirds or so I really enjoyed it. There were many anecdotes from both the business world and the author's personal life that made me think as well as entertained me. However there was a shift in the last hour or two where the author introduced more and more faith-based personal anecdotes and they came off as somewhat arrogant and self-congratulatory. For that I had to remove some stars from my rating.

After 45 minutes I just couldn't take the terrible narration any more. I gave up and returned it. Every male character she voiced sounded like an evil troll or woodland elf with a forced Scottish brogue. There were so many male characters it was tough to follow and painful to listen to.

This was a beautifully written book and the story was engaging but without this incredible narrator it could have been an audible disaster. Luckily the narrator perfectly executed the story with subtle but clear character voice changes, perfect intensity changes given the variety of story points, and great German accented English with (to my ears) perfect German word pronunciation. He was a pleasure to listen to for the entire 14 hours.
