Historia
Having a loved one turn his back on the faith we embraced through our formative years forced me to honestly reflect on things I had never dared to question before. My journey through my thoughts and with my brother would take me into places I did not expect to go—places that were simultaneously painful as well as uplifting. I would find myself covered in dirt from everything anti-Mormonism has had to throw at me, but I would also find myself shielded and renewed by gaining a deeper understanding of the beautiful truths surrounding The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The author takes us on a journey through his brother’s faith crisis, which sends him on a bit of a faith crisis for himself too. It’s full of great little stories within the bigger story and helps us see how all things can work toward God’s plan of growing and understanding. I especially liked the last section entitled “Why I Stay”. The narration is clean and well performed.

Historia
As I held my infant son in my arms, I began to ponder some difficult questions regarding LDS priesthood blessings. If his life ever became threatened by illness or accident and I needed to administer a priesthood blessing, how could I possibly know what to say? How could I know whether my feelings were from inspiration or from my own desires? If my duty was to tune into the frequency of the “Still, Small Voice” prompting me, then how could I possibly tune out the fatherly instincts screaming inside my head?

Historia
The Scriptures Are Real (TSAR) with Kerry Muhlestein is a podcast where we look at elements of the scriptures that have become real to us. We interview both experts (people with language, archaeological, historical backgrounds, etc.), and lay folks, and explore times when the scriptures became real to them. This is done from the viewpoint of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We believe that there is real power in the scriptures and that as they become more real we can better apply them to our lives and draw more power from them. If you listen to this podcast you will ...

Just discovered this podcast!
Revisado: 12-18-22
I just discovered this podcast after searching for Muhlestein (after hearing him speak at something else) and this is definitely my kind of podcast! After listening to a few of the recent ones, I decided to start back at the beginning of all of them. I dread the day when I'm all the way caught up, but then I'll just go back to my favorites when there's not a new one. So much for me to learn about Abraham and Egypt and all that good stuff.

Historia
What is the boy crisis? It's a crisis of education. For the first time in American history, our sons will have less education than their dads. It's a crisis of mental health. As boys become young men, their suicide rates go from equal to girls to six times that of young women. It's a crisis of sexuality. Sex is a minefield for our sons. They're bombarded with mixed messages, afraid of being either too sensitive or not sensitive enough.

First half is priceless, second half a lot of crap
Revisado: 10-25-22
This book did a fantastic job at pinpointing and analyzing the problem of boys and men being devalued. mybissue is with the later chapters where it talks about a lot of nonsense about autism being caused by Tylenol, boys being cured of autism and ADHD with a gluten free diet and hot baths etc. So, definitely worth my time, but there is a lot to roll my eyes about.

Historia
Eugene England (1933–2001) — one of the most influential and controversial intellectuals in modern Mormonism — lived in the crossfire between religious tradition and reform. This first serious biography, by leading historian Terryl L. Givens, shimmers with the personal tensions felt deeply by England during the turmoil of the late 20th century.

NOT QUITE AS RIVETING AS I HOPED
Revisado: 02-09-22
I'm a fan of the Givens writings and have heard a lot about Eugene England while still not knowing a whole lot about him. The story of his life was not quite the page turner I had hoped it would be, but I am glad I read it. I thought Givens did a fantastic job at telling the story of conflicts and controversy without being preachy or pushy one way or the other. Great job at giving both sides and letting us decide our own thoughts.

Historia
From Andre Agassi, one of the most beloved athletes in history and one of the most gifted men ever to step onto a tennis court, a beautiful, haunting autobiography. Agassi brings a near-photographic memory to every pivotal match and every relationship. Never before has the inner game of tennis and the outer game of fame been so precisely limned. In clear, taut prose, Agassi evokes his loyal brother, his wise coach, his gentle trainer, all the people who help him regain his balance and find love at last with Stefanie Graf.

Historia
With the advancement of the internet, changing worldviews, and the rising generation of millennials, Latter-day Saints today face unique challenges to faith on an unprecedented scale. Unlike most books written to help those struggling with their testimonies, Bridges: Ministering to Those Who Question is written to help local leaders and family members better understand the sources of these challenges and how to minister to those affected by them.

I don't agree with every bit, but...
Revisado: 05-04-21
I'm not going to sit here and pretend I agree with everything that was said in this book, but I d 100% agree with the idea that we Latter-day Saints need to be more open to the idea that other points of view are just as valid as our own. that idea is spot on and has kept me thinking about this concept from many different angles and for many days. I think the main concepts in his book are some of the most important lessons we need in the Church today.

One of the best books I've read/listened to.
Revisado: 03-31-21
I was assigned to read this book back in college, but when I did, I gave it only enough attention to pass a test. I found it so interesting that I promised myself I would circle back and give it a better read after graduation when I would have more time. This book opened my eyes on so many levels. Fascinating and horrifying all at once. True evils and true courage are found in this true story, the likes of which we Americans have little idea.
