Historia
BBC Radio 4's Poetry Please is the longest-running broadcast of verse anywhere in the world. First aired in 1979, the programme, a request show which broadcasts to two million listeners a week, has become a unique record of the country's best-loved poems over the decades since its inception. The BBC has looked back through its rich archive of recordings to produce a poll of the most asked-for and most broadcast pieces ever: 50 of those poems are read here by Adjoa Andoh and Anton Lesser.

Listen for Anton Lesser
Revisado: 04-18-25
Anton Lesser is amazing at reading poetry, as always. The unimportant woman reads her pieces badly and shows she doesn't understand how enjambment works. No surprise when you look her up.

Historia
Known for his evocative exploration of nature, mortality, and the moods & seasons of time & earth, Frost's poems in this 1928 collection continue to captivate listeners with their profound simplicity and ability to express things we’ve never said, yet always known. In this perennially uplifting compilation, Frost contemplates the interplay between time’s tireless trudge, humanity’s hopes & resignations, and the enduring reflections of the eternal expressed in nature’s little wonders.

overall great reader
Revisado: 12-19-24
Great voice and good handling of the poetry as poetry, but would be perfect if the reader understood that you don't have to pause at the end of each line--enjambment means the line flows into the next without a break. Still great overall.

Read too quickly
Revisado: 07-24-24
This is read far too quickly with no attention to nuance in the verse or meaning. The reader doesn't seem to understand how meter works. There are also several errors in reading the text that should have been re-recorded.

Good reading and selection, minus the lecturing
Revisado: 06-27-24
Lots of good selections here, and read well. Especially great to have some Middle English pieces. Could have done without the lecturing in the introduction about how evil White men are. Give me a break--nobody of consequence buys that trash. Skip the last section that was just tacked on for self-flagelating White-guilters.
Also, Abraham Popoola is incapable of reading poetry with any intelligence or feeling. Disgusting performances.

Historia
Walt Whitman said, "...poetry is the voice of the nation, expressing its deepest concerns, ambitions and longings," which is certainly true of the great classic poetry of America. This wide-ranging anthology, from the earliest poets of the 16th century to the present day, reflects the changing preoccupations and visions of Americans, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, E.E. Cummings, and more.

Don't Listen to the Whiner
Revisado: 11-07-19
Despite the other whining reviewer, this is a great collection, on par with the rest of the Naxos recordings.
Some may hate America and wish to denigrate her. Who could be surprised that those same people are the sort who hate actual poetry, preferring instead the idiocies of modernism? Poetry is metrical. Rhyme is not necessary, but it is good. Patriotism is a fitting subject for verse.
