As a Filipino immigrant child whose family arrived to San Jose in 1985, this story was incredibly familiar. Never have I ever seen my father (who is Ilocano) and my mother (who is Tagalog) as characters in a novel. It was beautiful to see the complexity in the dynamics between the generations - between those who are first and second generation immigrants. AND it was so enjoyable to listen to a story that takes place in all the familiar places in the South Bay - particularly in Milpitas and North San Jose.

It was alright. Definitely a slow burn. Three stars for the quasi racist depiction of a Filipina domestic worker. The voicing of the character portrayed was definitely not in a Filipino accent.

I love all the Easter eggs that Lisa Jewell has planted in this sequel - it was helpful that I re-read the Family Upstairs before diving into this one. Great continuation - I also love how the timeline layers back to uncover events that have happened during the last book. Excellent!

This could’ve been such a great story, so I kept listening, hoping it would get less cringy….but none of the characters are likable. Dehumanizing depictions of the birth families… in the end, the author doesn’t refer to them by name - even though a chapter had been dedicated to each family.
May have been okay if I listed to this back in 2010 when it was first published, but for 2021, this is very tone deaf.
