Couldn't Wait for it to be Over...
Revisado: 08-18-18
I couldn't wait for this book to be over, and not in a good way. I guess I was suppose to see the main character as a strong and brave person. Unfortunately I saw her as stupid and selfish. Quite frankly, she got on my last nerve. I debated whether or not to listen to the last 30 minutes of the book. I resolved the drudgery of the narration and the story itself by doubling the playback speed. I don't know if I will be wasting a credit on any more books by this author.

Historia
Cadence didn't sit down one night and decide that downing two bottles of wine was a brilliant idea. Her drinking snuck up on her - as a way to sleep, to help her relax after a long day, to relieve some of the stress of the painful divorce that's left her struggling to make ends meet with her five-year-old son Charlie. It wasn't always like this. Just a few years ago, Cadence seemed to have it all - a successful husband, an adorable son, and a promising career as a freelance journalist.

Sorry to Say it Was BORING
Revisado: 03-19-16
I was not able to finish this book. I quit at chapter 7. I couldn't stand one more conversation between the main character and her son, or the main character and anyone else. There was noting of interest going on, just conversations.

I just stopped listening at chapter 34. I found it difficult to follow the timeline of the story and I didn't really like or care about any of the characters or what happened to them. I finally just gave up.

Historia
Now a major motion picture directed by Stephen Frears ( The Queen, High Fidelity) and starring Judi Dench ( Skyfall, Notes on a Scandal) and Steve Coogan ( The Trip, Hamlet 2): the heartbreaking true story of an Irishwoman and the secret she kept for 50 years. When she became pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena Lee was sent to a convent to be looked after as a "fallen woman". Then the nuns took her baby from her and sold him, like thousands of others, to America for adoption. Fifty years later, Philomena decided to find him.

I have to agree, not as advertised
Revisado: 03-11-14
I got this book because I was anxious to see the movie and am waiting for it to be released on DVD.
I have to agree with the other reviews that express a disappointment with the title and the publisher's summary. Perhaps it would have been better titled "Michael, Fifty Years of Looking for Closure".
Yes, it was a shocking and moving story at points, but I would of liked to hear less about Michael or at least more about what Philomena was experiencing.
I fast forwarded through many chapters about Michael's political career, because I just didn't find his personal life or working career of interest, and I was growing tired of the author injecting his thinly disguised political views.
I so wanted to hear more about Philomena and what was going on in her life, what she was thinking but that was thrown in at the end.
I don't think I will be seeing the movie now.

Historia
For 20 years, Kayla, Antoinette and Val have performed their own special summer ritual. Once a year, the old friends put aside their daily, separate lives to drink champagne, swap stories and swim naked under the Nantucket stars. But on one of those bonding nights, one of their trio swims out from the shore and doesn't return. After the surviving friends emerge from their grief, they realize that the repercussions of their loss go far beyond their little circle, and they begin to uncover layers of secrets—and their connections to each other—that were never revealed on the beach.

It's Hard For Me to Rate This One
Revisado: 02-21-14
It's hard for me to give this book a rating. I finished it, so at least it delivered on some level. However, Elin Hilderbrand seems to have a knack for creating characters that I do not like. I didn't like any of the 3 women main characters in this book, but I stuck with the book to see what happened, and because a friend of mine recommended the book. I started another book written by the same author, and about 1/3 of the way through, again, I decided I didn't like any of the characters, didn't care what happened to them, and didn't finish the book.
I don't think I will be spending any more money on Elin Hilderbrand books.

Historia
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his Black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

Kept me interested
Revisado: 10-28-13
The story kept me interested. The narrator was excellent. I would of liked an epilogue to know how Jake and his family were impacted by the results of the trial, but maybe that is being held for another book.

Historia
Lottie just knows that her boyfriend is going to propose during lunch at one of London’s fanciest restaurants. But when his big question involves a trip abroad, not a trip down the aisle, she’s completely crushed. So when Ben, an old flame, calls her out of the blue and reminds Lottie of their pact to get married if they were both still single at 30, she jumps at the chance. No formal dates - just a quick march to the altar and a honeymoon on Ikonos, the sun-drenched Greek island where they first met years ago. Their family and friends are horrified. Fliss, Lottie’s older sister, knows that Lottie can be impulsive - but surely this is her worst decision yet.

A Stinker Even at Double Speed
Revisado: 05-18-13
I loved the Shopaholic series and enjoyed a few of Sophie Kinsella's other books, but even as fiction I have to say this book was shallow, pointless and painful to listen to, a real stinker. I couldn't stand any of the characters.
At one point while I was listening, I just blurted out loud, "For pity sakes, just go to a cheap motel and put me out of my misery". Luckily I was alone at home at the time.
The female characters were just whiny and dysfunctional. I even listened to the book at double speed just hoping to get it over with.
I have vowed not to pay for another Sophie Kinsella book.

Although I knew what the family secret would be before I even started reading the book, I did enjoy the book. I grew to like the characters and was anxious to get to the end of the book to see how the story ended for them.

Predictable
Revisado: 04-10-13
I couldn't wait for this book to become available, but unfortunately I was disappointed by it. Very predictable. I will admit that I actually fell asleep several times listening to this book and missed hearing several chapters, but got to the end of the book without feeling like I needed to go back and listen to the chapters I slept through.
