Historia
Daughters are the Ang family’s curse. In 1948, civil war ravages the Chinese countryside, but in rural Shandong, the wealthy, landowning Angs are more concerned with their lack of an heir. Hai is the eldest of four girls and spends her days looking after her sisters. Headstrong Di, who is just a year younger, learns to hide in plain sight, and their mother—abused by the family for failing to birth a boy—finds her own small acts of rebellion in the kitchen.

Daughters of Shandong
Revisado: 04-26-25
I was surprised at how well the story flowed. I know little about the history of China and Taiwan so I was concerned that I would get lost with the names of towns, names of the people and the history in the events that were covered in this book. But the focus was on the family and that made it easy to follow even with all of the historical events taking placearound them. The author did a great job of writing a tribute to her grandmother and her family for all of us to read. I highly recommend this book.

Drama of Julia

Misinformation about events inherent life during her service interesting until I learned that a lot of it was made up. I guess the author felt she needed to do that to enhance the drama in the life of Julie Child during her service.

The Secret Life of Sunflowers

I enjoyed the story line. I did not care for the readers and some of the phraseology in the book during modern times was hooked. Perhaps there was a better way to express the feeling? I would not recommend to anyone simply because I seldom make recommendations outside of my favorite authors.

Passable

I struggled with this one. So, I actually went to the back of the book and read backwards. It helped somewhat. I felt I was drowning nazism and I just wanted the book to move on, for goodness sakes. I found myself getting sleepy while listening.

Historia
Mrs. Sookie Poole of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to relaxing and perhaps traveling with her husband, Earle. The only thing left to contend with is her mother, the formidable Lenore Simmons Krackenberry. Lenore may be a lot of fun for other people, but is, for the most part, an overbearing presence for her daughter. Then one day, quite by accident, Sookie discovers a secret about her mother's past that knocks her for a loop and suddenly calls into question everything she ever thought she knew about herself, her family, and her future.

WHAT?!
Revisado: 05-17-18
I really did enjoy the book until the last chapter. Seriously? It had absolutely nothing to do with the story line and I feel was just an attempt at indoctrination. IF I were to tell anyone that I read this book it would be with the disclaimer of that completely unnecessary last chapter and what it was about. I went from ‘moved to tear’ to angry that it was ‘tacked on’.
