Historia
December 7, 1941 - America is attacked by the Japanese and dragged into a worldwide struggle for power unlike anything ever seen on Earth. While the United States and the Navy reel from the devastation of Pearl Harbor, the Nazis begin a brutal campaign within sight of the shores of the nation. U-boats prowl the American coast from Maine to the Gulf of Mexico, sinking shipping seemingly unopposed!

Great detail wasted
Revisado: 04-01-25
The technical detail in this book is outstanding. I've read many WW2 sub novels and the technical details in this book are some of the best. Given this I can overlook some historical plot stretches such as U boats not shooting at vulnerable targets and civilian women assisting in submerged attacks. However it is the cheezy stereotypical accents employed by the narrator, and the constant chuckling and goofing around by the characters that detracted from the realism of this book. I hope the sequels improve on these glaring faults!

Historia
On December 16, 1842, the US brig-of-war Somers dropped anchor in the New York Harbor at the end of a voyage intended to teach a group of adolescents the rudiments of naval life. But this routine exercise ended in catastrophe. Commander Alexander Slidell Mackenzie came ashore claiming he had prevented a mutiny that would have left him and his officers dead. Some of the thwarted mutineers were being held under guard, but three had already been hanged at sea.

Great Maritime History
Revisado: 02-25-25
A well researched and well told story, more enjoyable than Patrick O'Brien because it is true. There is plenty of nautical detail, an an on-board plot, and enough information to let you decide a verdict but still leave some doubt. An engaging story and courtroom tale.

Could have been great
Revisado: 01-24-25
I love the authors WW2 books and looked forward to this one. The technical and military detail make the plot believable and engaging. Unfortunately the tedious, unnecessary, distracting, soft port love story detracts from the plot. I quickly learned to fast forward past any chapter that began at the marina and did not miss anything I needed to know about the plot. Have a finger on the skip to next chapter button when listening to this one.

Historia
Two months after D-Day, the Allies found themselves in a stalemate in Normandy, having suffered enormous casualties attempting to push through hedgerow country. Troops were spent, and American tankers, lacking the tactics and leadership to deal with the terrain, were losing their spirit. General George Patton and the other top US commanders needed an officer who knew how to break the impasse and roll over the Germans - they needed one man with the grit and the vision to take the war all the way to the Rhine. Patton and his peers selected Maurice Rose.

Although the book contains a few war stories, and has a few dry stretches, it gives an interesting high level command perspective of the European campaign.

Fun but predictable
Revisado: 11-03-24
Good character development and a believable premise, but the story became predictable at the end. No surprise about who would live or not and the string of cliffhangers became a little monotonous.

Historia
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Valley Girl to Xena, really???
Revisado: 08-22-24
I picked this book knowing that it would be light summer reading, enjoyed World War Z and believed the review that likened it to books by Stephen King and Michael Crichton. Alas I found the protagonist Valley Girl character somewhat irritating and her 3 week transformation into a seasoned hunter totally unbelievable. The characters do not benefit from Stephen King like development and I'm missing the similarities to Crichton plots. In the end I found myself hoping the Bigfeet would win. All that being said, bigfoot stories are fun.

Reading River God first not required to enjoy this Raiders of the Lost Arc story but it builds on it nicely. Lots of adventure fun written by someone who knows Africa. It only Lost a star because the villian is a bit of a caricature and the sex a bit gratuitous.

With the epic sweep of Min Jin Lee's Pachinko and Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing and the lyrical beauty of Vaddey Ratner's In the Shadow of the Banyan, The Mountains Sing tells an enveloping, multigenerational tale of the Trần family, set against the backdrop of the Việt Nam War. Trần Diệu Lan, who was born in 1920, was forced to flee her family farm with her six children during the Land Reform as the Communist government rose in the North.

View Vietnam for the other side
Revisado: 03-07-24
I read this book on my first visit to Vietnam to get a Vietnamese experience perspective of the war and Buffalo Afternoon for an American one. I feared this book would simply villify Americans, but since it tells the story of a family through the French and Japanese occupation, and efforts to reunify the country after the Americans left, Americans play only a small part in the story. The book does a great job of showing the effects of war and internal repression on people and how, with resilience, they can survive it and heal. I strongly recommend it as a story of tragedy, survival and healing, all without bashing Americans.
