You might need to give this one a little bit at the beginning because there are so many characters, but boy does she do a good job. You feel like you know each and every one of them by the end. She’s just a born storyteller.

I loved reading about a queer Asian American in 1950s San Francisco. I did find the protagonist a little flat in that she didn’t speak much and was very closed off. I also would have liked to see more development between her and the other teenage girl she fell in love with. It was hard to understand how their connection was so deep based on the author’s portrayal of their interactions. Overall, however, I thought it was an excellent story and had a realistic-feeling portrayal of that time period and the struggles that Asian Americans and queer folk, especially lesbians, had to maneuver through. I just wanted a bit deeper character and relationship development.

I’m going to read more by this author. I love how she tells stories about important women in history that most people don’t even know about.

This book was surprisingly delightful and filled my heart. The writing and the actor were both brilliant. I’m going to recommend it to everyone I know. This is one of those books that I know will stay with me for years and years to come.

Clare Corbett was perfection. So well written by Sandie Jones. The characters and dialogue were so natural and believable and the story was compelling from start to finish. Well written and amazingly acted/read! Thank you, Reese, for recommending on your Book of the Month club!!!

Too much telling and not enough showing

The story was good, but the telling of it was good, but not excellent. I felt like there was a bit too much telling and not enough showing. Also, there was not enough emotion and tension in areas. This next comment has nothing to do with my rating, but just a little nitpick: I’m from Houston, Texas and have spent time in small towns in Texas and there were some words pronounced wrong. For example, Brookshire Brothers and a few other words I can’t recall. My suggestion is that when the setting of a story (small town Texas) is one of the main characters, that the director should catch those mispronounced words because they take away from the feel of the setting for those who are familiar with it.
