Historia
Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.

Engaging story
Revisado: 09-14-24
The story, setting and character development are very good. Descriptions of the area around the Adirondacks are spot on. The chapters jump back and forth in time so quickly, it can be jarring. The ending wraps up a little too quickly. After so much time spent developing Alice, we are left to only imagine how she handles the outcome, so it feels a little unresolved.

Historia
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret.

What a disappointment
Revisado: 07-25-24
Beautifully written, but wretchedly disappointing story. Characters are flat with little development. The plot lags in the middle. I found my self thinking “I really don’t care” and “this better be good or it’s been a huge waste of time.” Sadly it was the latter.

Love Gabriel Allon!
Revisado: 07-12-24
The reading of this audiobook was just awful. All the women’s and old men’s voices sounded the same - breathy with some petulant indistinguishable accent. I would’ve enjoyed the book much more if I had read it instead of listening to it.

Historia
Laurel Canyon was the neighborhood perched above the clubs and record companies of Sunset Strip where Joni Mitchell, Jim Morrison, Graham Nash, Cass Elliot, Carole King, Don Henley, and Peter Tork, just to name a few, lived and collaborated to make an indelible mark on our music and our culture.

Interesting anecdotes and descriptions from the 60s, 70s & 80s.
Revisado: 01-25-24
It became a little too name-droppy with characters mostly uninteresting from the 90s on. The book could’ve stopped at 1990 and that would’ve been fine.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

This is what generational abuse looks like
Revisado: 11-08-23
What would the royal family have been like if they were “allowed” to hug, laugh and have more fun together? If they could have simply lightened the f**k up. It’s not like they have the weight of nations on the their shoulders. They’re mere figureheads. The Queen was psychologically abused by her family and husband, her son Charles was abused and neglected by both parents, Diana was abused by the family and staff, so of course her children were abused as well. It’s a very sad story, not so much about the absurdity of the modern monarchy, but that children and whole family’s are frozen in their icy “roles” that have nothing to do with being human. Imagine if every meeting involved laughter, hugs and games, without ridiculous protocol. Imagine more that the royals’ relationship with the press weren’t so toxic and predatory. My takeaway? Make their palaces into museums and toss the lot. Let them be trained to do get real jobs, not mindless task like ribbon-cutting and promoting their favorite causes or charities. Those jobs require press in order to be effective, so it is a perfect ouroboros - the snake that eats its tail and is continually devouring itself and being reborn from itself.
Harry and Meg seem like nice people, but I get the impression from the book that we are only hearing their side. I imagine there’s more, but really, who cares - it’s tit for tat and “he said, she said”. Ultimately it’s a story of an enormously dysfunctional family and a boy who simply never got enough love. I hope the abuse will stop with his immediate family now, and I hope the layers of ice will eventually melt away.
