Historia
With insight and great wit, Emmeline Pankhurst's autobiography chronicles the beginnings of her interest in feminism through to her militant and controversial fight for women's right to vote. While Emmeline received a good education, attending an all-girls school and being expected to conform to social norms, she rebelled against conventional women's roles. At the age of 14 a meeting of women's rights activists sparked a lifelong passion in her to fight for women's freedom, and she would later claim that it was on that day she became a suffragist.

From these disparate phenomena: Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse who as president of a Midwestern college observed the trials of this generation up close, sees an existential threat to the American way of life. In The Vanishing American Adult, Sasse diagnoses the causes of a generation that can't grow up and offers a path for raising children to become active and engaged citizens. He identifies core formative experiences that all young people should pursue.

A truly non-partisan essay on being an American
Revisado: 07-06-17
I am a Democrat. I have never crossed the party line to vote for a Republican. This book is so visionary and well written that I am seriously reconsidering my absolute unwillingness to do so. Ben Sasse is a historian statesman cut from the same cloth as Cicero. He presents here and argument for America as an idea rather than a legislative agenda, and it is really inspiring. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
If any American fictional character of the 20th century seems likely to be immortal, it is Lorelei Lee of Little Rock, Arkansas, the not-so-dumb blonde who knew that diamonds are a girl's best friend. Outrageous, charming, and unforgettable, she's been portrayed on stage and screen by Carol Channing and Marilyn Monroe, and has become the archetype of the footloose, good-hearted gold digger, with an insatiable appetite for orchids, champagne, and precious stones.

A Girl Like I Loves This Book, Which Is An Audio Book
Revisado: 10-23-15
I can't say enough good of this novel. It is conscious of literary form the way Gertrude Stein's poetry is, and it is a biting and effervescent satire of sexual hypocrisies and gender objectification of the Jazz Age. McPhee writes a marvelous introduction, and the narrator is spot- on.
Brava to all!

Historia
Country girl Denise Baudu arrives in Paris hoping for a position in her uncle's clothing shop. However, her uncle's shop, along with other small shops in the area, is doing poorly. This is due to the large store across the street - The Ladies' Paradise - which is swallowing up the small specialty stores by offering 'one-stop shopping' at discounted prices. 19th Century Paris is experiencing the dawn of the department store. Despite her loyalty to her uncle, Denise is drawn to the progressive Ladies' Paradise and it's owner, the driven but charismatic Monsieur Mouret.

Amazing story, HORRIBLE narration
Revisado: 05-31-14
What would have made The Ladies' Paradise better?
The narrator mispronounces words high school students should know how to pronounce. She also mispronounced every French name, even the word " Monsieur" turned into "mon-sewer." I want my money back!
Who was your favorite character and why?
The novel itself is my favorite novel of all time. Denise, the protagonist, defies Victorian expectations by becoming a canny businesswoman. The novel is a masterwork of Zola, and Denise is a modern woman.
How could the performance have been better?
Get a narrator who understands the vocabulary or at least pronounces it correctly. And it would be nice if she seemed to be at all engaged with the text in any manner. I have never paid for sex from a streetwalker, but I imagine that this narration's joyless and impatient manner resembles this kind of work.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
The book gives me hope for the human race. The narration makes me want to find the narrator and force her to look up all the words in the dictionary she mispronounced, then give her a quiz.
Any additional comments?
