Avoid
Revisado: 03-24-24
Spoiler ahead: book was ok but it's full of emotional abuse and pushes the idea of family privacy to the point it makes you hate most of the characters and their unwillingness to speak up for what is right. Then to top it off SPOILER: the main character is killed off. Yep it's like the author decided they no longer like this person who was becoming independent and questioning the world. Instead they make the side character (his mother) the main character moving forward. The Mothers backstory was a little interesting but not enough that it made the story interesting enough to carry the book on her own.

When it comes to action and adventure, every hero needs a good sidekick. Holmes has Watson, Batman has Robin, and Daniel has . . . Orrin. More like brothers than friends, they always have each other's backs. And as Daniel is the big, strong, handsome type, Orrin is more than happy to remain in his shadow at school, at parties, pretty much everywhere. Then things take a turn for the truly weird when a terrible accident catapults the pair into a world totally unlike their own, in which the rules of a role-playing game hold sway.

Good Book Bad Creative Narrative Choice

Really enjoyed the book but like everyone else, hated the change of voice anytime a the name of a class or system reference came up. It would have been fine if it was done just in system menus/analyze readouts (when it isn't the character reading it) but it shouldn't be used in conversation or anywhere it breaks the flow of a character's words or thoughts.

Alec began his 18th birthday with the temple monks. By day's end, he discovers he possesses magical abilities. Except his magic is unique. He doesn't require grimoires and incantations to cast spells. Alec's magic is entirely natural. He can, somehow, absorb the elements from objects and manipulate them according to his will. This power is incredible, but difficult to master. If he's going to learn how to use his natural magic, it'll take the tutelage of Archmage Diamondspear, one of the most adept magic users in the kingdom.

Revisado: 01-12-24
The book was fine. Not amazing but not terrible. The overarching story is there but the book is rushed. It leaves out a lot of details and jumps to conclusions that before the story has time to develop the plot. This leads to a story that easily could have been 10 hours longer and far more enjoyable. As a free read and need a filler it was good. I wouldn't pay for or use a credit on the story. Hopefully the author is able to grow there story telling. I don't mind paying for a shorter book so long as the plot is well developed.

Decent book but annoyed at its focus.
Revisado: 06-27-23
Overall I liked the writing but not the story focus. The heavy focus on making the antagonist seem like a good guy and the protagonist feel like a side character with minimal time spent developing his story, powers or character. The antagonist story tries to paint him as a victim that went a little too far. In reality it's a short period of time in their history used to justify doing horrific things. While the antagonist is capable of good but so are all bad people. I'm simply not a fan trying to humanize evil in a positive light. All the while the protagonist is being placed in a world and told the antagonist has done nothing wrong and to get over it.

Frustrating departure from where the last books ended.
Revisado: 05-04-23
To Brent
I started the Night Angel Trilogy while wandering around the fantasy section at Books & Co. in Kettering OH in high School. I found your books at random, saw the description and had a feeling this was going to be something special. I loved the original trilogy and the light bringer saga.
Unfortunately this book felt like a story 20 years removed and then over corrected to a Kylar that failed to grow up and learn. While it makes mention of his mistakes in the story, it feels disconnected from what he was. The Story has Vi referring to things that had happened in a way that felt like we should already know what happened. Until 8+ hours in you realize that prior references to the past are being told much later in the story.
Kylar feels 20 years older at the start and then 5 years younger though out the the rest of the book. The book felt dark in ways that left plot holes and odd behavior. Many of them by the end I no longer cared about them being fixed but just wanted Kylar to be Kylar again.
It seems Vi is going to be the focus of this story. I'm fine with that but the way it was done to make her that focus seems forced. I look forward to the next book. Unfortunately this book Doesn't feel like one i will ever want to reread or listen too again.

Skip, Poorly written story.
Revisado: 02-09-23
The over aching story is fine but the way its written and the way the details are filled in are poorly written. Book goes from a girl dealing with a guy that is basically her stalker to thinking of him as a friend at a moments notice for no better reason than she finds him attractive even though she hates how he behaves. Guy follows her around hairdressing her and even just shows up at her house claiming he is her friend and kisses her after she tells him they are not friends. When they finally take the time to explain her powers to her all you can think is she has been causing magical disasters for 3 years and they don't bother to tell her until after she ends up in a magical battle. Only reason I listened as far into the book as I did was it was free and I was out credits. Avoid spending money on this and pick up something better written.

I really enjoyed the first book and I'm happy the second book didn't disappoint. The character development continued in a natural way while and managed to make the characters seem special but not overpowered. I can't wait to see what comes next.

Enjoyable but had a couple bumps
Revisado: 11-04-22
I enjoyed the book overall the book has SPOILER "time jump" SPOILER that interrupted the story in a negative way but wasn't nearly as bad as I initially feared. I was worried it was going to rush the end of the story. It wouldn't be the first time I've had an author rush the end of a story to hit the 3 book publisher requirement. While it mostly avoids this (not entirely) the story after this continues at a steady natural pace.

Dwarves and Elves are getting old.
Revisado: 10-19-22
I enjoyed this book. Its not the best in the series but I enjoyed it and feel Luke Daniels did what was expected of him given the material that was written for him. Unfortunately the Dwarves and Elves got old real quick. I wasn't a fan of them when they where first introduced and its only gotten worse. The underling story is enjoyable but the bro dude behavior of the Dwarves is over the top and annoying. By the end of the book I was wishing he would switch sides but thinking about how the Elves behave I don't think it would be any better. Jackson needs a major update as well if he is going to remain one of the only non dwarven companions. He was funny and enjoyable comic relief in small bit. With him being the "best friend" its getting old how often he is injected into the story with his annoying antics. Between the dwarves and Jackson it feels kind of like a Will Ferrell comedy, better with the occasional pop in LOL moment but typically far worse as the lead. Hopfully the guild becomes a larger part of the next story. Allowing them to take the edge off of what has been too much over the top personalities and not enough characters with depth and multidimensional behavior.

Loved this book
Revisado: 10-19-22
This book was a well done. I have hopping from new to me author to author and while I have enjoyed several new books this one so far is my favorite of them. I fully expected an OP character with minimal story given its shorter length. I was surprised to find the story focused on the story and leaving the bulk of the combat for later. This book mostly focuses on training as well as a good base development for the main character. I hope future books are longer, providing lots of details about the world. My favorite books are always epics and I know not everyone is cut out for or needs to create an epic to tell a good story. That said I am happy with this purchase and recommend people give it a try.
