Fantastic narrator -- well done. She kept me in the story more than anything. There's is much to recognize in this story, but the new mythology is well presented and holds out interest. There's also some of the DaVinci Code here as well. Give it a try if this sounds interesting. You can always return it.

What made the experience of listening to Yes Please the most enjoyable?

Amy Poehler nailed it in her book. This is the reason to listen to books: when a writer reads their own work and they are REALLY GOOD AT IT. If you know Amy's work, then you know she is funny, compassionate, kind, and not afraid to share her weaknesses along with her triumphs. She time travels back and forth in her book (and relates her theory of time travel), and all the while I felt like I was listening to her talk to me on the phone or allow me to be a fly on the wall of her life. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Audiobook of the Year? Yes!!

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 02-26-10

I chose this book based on the Audible "Best of List" as well as the suggestion of a book club friend. I enjoyed the book immensely, due mostly to the fabulous production and amazing vocal performances. There is something for everyone in this book, and although female-centric, it isn't "chick-lit." This is a wonderful story with an inside view of an important time in recent American history.

Great read, even if you're not a tennis fan

I loved this story from start to finish. I am a sports fan and was always aware of Agassi, but I was never a big tennis fan. This revealing portrait of the boy, teen, and man behind "image is everything" is compelling and compulsively readable (listenable). Highly recommended.

Best Bet for One Credit

5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 12-08-09

This is masterful storytelling by the best of the best. At only one credit, this is a must have. It isn't horror, but the idea of the dome is horrifying. The narration is very good and the action is fast-paced and there is a fabulous cast of characters, both good and evil. Other Stephen King books I have read and enjoyed; "The Stand," "The Talisman," and "Different Seasons."

Good Story, Dizzy Narration

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 07-15-09

This is a review of the director's choice of narration. Having different narrators for different characters/POVs is nothing new and often works. This is the first book I've listened to where the different characters read as if reading a play, but with the inclusion of "he said," or "she said" being spoken by the character whose POV we are in. This technique works in other audiobooks, namely those by Orson Scott Card because I think the director chooses in those books to omit the "he said" and let it read like a play or dramatic reading.
That being said, this is an entertaining and well written book. If you want to experience this book, I don't recommend this format.

Excellent follow-up

Bean is my favorite character in the Ender universe and in this story, which is really a Stratego game within which our favorite characters operate, Bean finally gets the girl, Petra Arcanian. Petra is my second favorite character and I disagree with the reviewer that said there is too much dialogue and that Card can't write dialogue. He is a playwright first and I find his words magical, especially how he voices Petra, Bean, and the indomitable Colonal Graph. If there is one thing missing from this series, it is the maturity of Peter: we missed the transformation. In "Ender's Game" Peter seems like he could easily become a killer like Achilles, but the focus instead is on his continued insecurity. I would like "The lost year of Peter maturing" as a novella.

Curmudgeonly Tale of the Road

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-15-09

I enjoyed this book so much. I think the magic is the sum of the parts: the narration is spot-on; the story of the open road is descriptive and interesting without being laborious; the literary allusions of the title are non-pretentious and often heart-aching; and the main character: priceless. I almost didn't get this book because of the other reviews, but trust me, for those of a certain sensibility, this is a journey you will enjoy.

What's the Problem?

Revisado: 05-01-08

Before I decided on the book, I was so scared of the narration from all the bad reviews, that I almost didn't get it. But after seeing the movie "21," and being an avid gambling fiend myself, I decided to take my chances. It was an intriguing story with hints of the movie, and I didn't hear any of the complaints about the narrator. In fact, I just heard an engaging story, which is what a halfway decent narrator is supposed to do. If you liked the movie, you'll love this book.

My book club had just finished "Stiff" when I read this book. I enjoyed the mystery and the learning as I went along. This book is like the Sue Grafton series meets C.S.I. A fun read.
