The nominal king, Edward VI, is 11 years old. His uncle, Edward Seymour, Lord Hertford, rules as Edward's regent and Protector. In the kingdom, radical Protestants are driving the old religion into extinction, while the Protector's prolonged war with Scotland has led to hyperinflation and economic collapse. Rebellion is stirring among the peasantry. Matthew Shardlake has been working as a lawyer in the service of Henry's younger daughter, the lady Elizabeth.

Badly in need of editing
Revisado: 06-12-23
As too often happens with writers of successful series, Sansom got carried away with his love of his characters and the era. He threw discipline to the winds and went on and on and on and …. His editor should have taken the reins and excised huge portions of this book. They even solved the very thin “mystery “ with 5 hours still to go.
For those without the fortitude to slog through, listen to the first third, Skip or skim the middle and pick it up again for the last few hours.

Read the book before writing the summary.
Revisado: 08-28-22
Someone should read the book before writing the summary. The conflict between the lead character and his old friend didn’t occur until the last 2 hours and even then it was not as described. This book is a saga about the journey of a man alone in the world trying to find a place.

Historia
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

Hours of droning with spurts of really fine writing. The book might have been better with a more enjoyable narrator. As it was, it was a self indulgent slog.

Historia
Like many well-to-do Upper East Siders over the age of 65, esteemed art appraiser Percival Skinner had planned to spend his retirement living off his savings. But a market correction has left him living below his prior means. One day he’s visited by a dapper fixer in search of a famous work by a Renaissance master. Skinner knows the work well: The original was owned by his ancestor, and was passed down through his family over the generations. If, as an intermediary, he can coordinate a sale, a small fortune awaits. Problem is, he might not be the only one on the make.

A Series of Implausible Coincidences
Revisado: 07-20-20
So many coincidences— every person Lilly meets is one who can help her. She thinks every man she meets has designs on her. She is given a violin by a “mysterious” old man. All she needs to do to solve the “mystery” is ask her mother, who lives in the same town. Instead she travels to London to ask a friend’s advice, then to Italy and Indonesia. She only gets back to her mother in the last chapter. So silly.

Historia
John Hooper's marvelously entertaining and perceptive new book is ideal for anyone seeking to understand contemporary Italy and the unique character of the Italians. Looking at the facts that lie behind and often belie the stereotypes, his revealing book sheds new light on many aspects of Italian life: football and Freemasonry, sex, symbolism, and the reason Italian has twelve words for a coat hanger yet none for a hangover.

Historia
On Christmas Eve, 1818, in a small Austrian village, a local Catholic priest and a church organist composed a Christmas carol that changed the course of holiday music forever. Exactly two hundred years later, it’s not the holiday season until you’ve heard “Silent Night” in the car, at the store and on TV – all in the same day.
In Jingle Bell Pop, John Seabrook, acclaimed author of The Song Machine, takes us deep inside the holiday music business. We go behind the scenes to meet some of the producers, songwriters and recording artists responsible for the timeless tunes we hear on repeat between Thanksgiving and Christmas every year.

A disappointment since the title was so promising. More like a mediocre term paper with few — very few — musical examples. I’d rather listen to an ordinary Christmas station where the notes are more interesting.

Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.
