This book is by no means an easy listen. It took me two times to finally understand ~70% of the content. But I kept going because of Sabina Spielrein and how brilliant she was, and how this author gave her the respect she deserved!

Wikipedia level TEA knowledge. Annoying lead. And is it even authentic?

I am not from a minority mountain tribe, but born in China , I am constantly questioning the authenticity of the main character and is more irritated by her at each turning page. She constantly proclaims her ethnic roots in the book but sometimes she acts like any other contemporary woman. Everybody says she is “the smartest”, but I can not tell from her actions. For example, during childhood despite how she always gets special treatment from the teacher, I can’t see how she is different from any other children in her village. Then there’s the counterfeit tea incident when she’s running a business, who is always gifted to her by some random teacher she met. She has been selling those teas for months and not suspicious of the amount of tea her childhood friend is supplying before getting busted. She then blames the whole thing on her friend. I mean earlier in the book there’s an emphasis on how she only made 1-2 best tea cake per year from the best leaves. I was wondering how she could get all the tea supplies. Either she is aware and happy for the income or she is not a good business owner or know tea that well. Also she is ultimately “saved” by a random rich guy, I am so done with her at that point. Also what’s with her wanting a boy for her second husband and named him Paul. Finally, the whole akha culture and tea culture seems very superficial and Wikipedia level. I am not even going to comment on the pure cringe of group therapy session on adopted daughter.

That being said, I will not read any other book from this author.

Maybe I missed something, but I’m half way through the book and expect more about the actual Silk Road instead of a history of globalization, which is an interesting topic. But this book is not what I thought it is

I have been looking for videos/classes to teach me the musicology theories (I am not if the is the right word tho) underneath master pieces for so long and this is exactly it!!! For me understanding the mechanisms underneath great music help me appreciate it more! My favorite lectures are the Beethoven emperor piano concerto, which provides the perspective of how ground breaking this is written when piano is still condita new technology and is still improving, and having it going toe to toe with a whole orchestra! And I can’t help but see how sexy it is every time I listen to this piece. Also love the lecture about Dvorak 9, this has been my go to piece of comfort music when I need some cheering up and encouragement to carry on my day. Now I understand a little more why I love it so much! I will definitely re-listen to this course!

Btw the accompanying pdf document is great!
